Emergency room sent my 9 yr. old home sick. What do I do?
All day son said his stomach hurt, lying around, not eating, or playing. I took him to ER and they did an X-ray of his stomach. They found poop up to his chest. Always has a hard time going #2. Always plugs up the toilet and it can be as big as my arm, No fever, not throwing up. I thought they would at least do an emema. They just told me to give him apple juice, & change his diet. I know about fiber, fruits & vegie diet but it isn't easy getting him to eat this stuff. Last June he came home from upnorth at my sisters moaning about his stomach, took him to a different hospital & he was severly packed. They dug it out and gave him 2 enemas. The hospital today didn't treat him. I can't to enemas.. too scarry. Told me to follow up w/ a specialist. What is wrong? Is it just diet or are there some issues? This has been going on for years but not where I've taken him to the hosptial. Doesn't eat alot of junk . Now lying around still not feeling good, gave him powder fiber. Tanx

First of all, try to get him up off the couch and moving around. It's not a good idea to do an enema unless you just have no other choice, and if he's just seriously constipated and not necessarily impacted- then doing a manual removal of things can actually damage tender tissues and the anal sphincter. That would create more problems than you want to know about. At nine, he's old enough to put matters to bluntly as far as eating and going to the bathroom when it's time. And he's young enough that he pretty much has to eat what is put before him, unless he wants to go hungry. And to get him to eat what he should do, sometimes you just have to be prepared to go that route. To get things moving at the moment, the fiber drinks are fine. You can also try a product called Senakot, which you can buy in lots of pharmacys and stores. It's a lot gentler on the personality than the old ex-lax, and will usually promote some results inside a day. Once things are on the move again, it will be time to have a coming to Mom's mind meeting with your young man as far as his diet habits. In some cases, you can sneak in the veggies, in shredded form, into stuff like spaghetti sauce and meatloaf. You should also provide all sandwiches on whole grain bread- preferably the kind that have visible bumpy ingredients. The powdered fiber may become a morning drink, before he gets anything else, or else- you know? I know it puts you in the bad guy seat, but sometimes it's just a role you have to take on. Some kids at his age just don't want to stop what they are doing long enough to go to the bathroom, not more than for a quick wee- and will set up this problem. Then it hurts to go, and they delay because of that, and the problem just becomes a viscious cycle. You can certainly see a gastroenterologist to make sure there isn't a physical reason for the problem, but in most kids it's not. It's just veggies and fruits don't taste as good as candy, and going poo seems to be a time out they don't want to take. I've had that with my own boys a few times. And I put the problem to them bluntly. I tell them flat out it's not healthy, and that the procedure to dig things out will hurt and be embarassing- two things they really don't want to experience. When needed, I will "encourage" proper eating by simply not offering any other choice in the matter. In some cases, I don't care how much ranch dressing goes on the salad or veggie sticks, as long as they go down. They don't know it, but I've been known to make my own, and stir in fiber powder. I chose whole or multigrain products whenever I can find them, and it's getting easier to do that. Even the spaghetti comes in a fiber mix or whole wheat now. Things like granola bars taste pretty good dunked in milk, and although they aren't the best for vitamins, they do provide grains for fiber. So you can take control of the diet end of things when you shop, and at the table by putting it as an eat or go hungry choice for him to make. He's old enough to make the connection between the belly pain and the constipation, and old enough to do his part of what needs doing to get it in control. You can also show him pictures of hemorrhoids from the net, if you want to have a little horrow show to motivate him. It's gross, it's mean, and sometimes thats what mom's have to do.

ok, first, don't panic. If the ER doctors sent him home it means he is not that ill. Now, if he is still hurting you'll have to administer him an enema, it has no difficulty, just buy one in the pharmacy, all you have to do is put the pointy part in his anus and squeeze it, that's it, he'll go #2. Now this solution it's only temporary, you have to make him drink at least 1.5 to 2 lts of water no sodas, make him eat fiber, and make him walk every that, walking activates a series of bowl movements that make people poop. I know it is easier said than done, but remember you are the parent

I had a problem like that (not severe), maybe I would go #2 every other day, and my stomach would hurt if i did not go. I have been taking Dannon Activia yojurt that claims to help regulate digestive system. It works great 4 me. If i miss a day, I am off. Try this. Best Wishes

If he has an obstruction, he needs to be treated immediately. Try a different hospital or urgent care. Did you tell the ER doc about his history and past treatments? Make sure you do.

Give him an enema, you CAN do it, Just put Lot`s of Vaseline on it,We just think we can`t do it. I`ll walk you thru it. Get your enema, some lukewarm water, gloves Vaseline & towels.Put towels on bed, have him to lay on side, straight legged ,now bend one knee sideways (give him something to cover penis) Get enema bottle ready, put gloves on put a lot of vasaline on rectum & nozzle, gently isert it.squeeze out liquid, refill, with lukewarm water.gently take it out, place towel between hislegs & let him go to bathroom. As long as you are gentle & use lotsof vasaline you will not hurt him Good Luck YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Anything you give him will take a while to work through, if he is like this he should be eating NO JUNK at all! Try some prune juice. Tell him he eats what you give him or nothing at all.

I have noticed that hospitals these days have a lot problems my suggestion would to take your son to his primary doctor to see what he could do tell them that it is urgent.

Bring him to another a Childrens or pediatric emergency Room. Regardless of what happens, bring hi to his pediatrician on MOnday.
