After four years the Austrian Army caught up with him and forced him to take a physical. At the physical he was said to be "Unfit for combatant and auxiliary duty-too weak. Unable to bear arms."

While he was recovering in the hospital he heard the news that Germany had surrendered. He was extremely depressed and would not talk to anyone for days.
