When I make a bad play in baseball, I continue to play bad. How can I stop?

There was tryouts today and I did all right in everything besides grounders. I am usually great as I play 3rd base but I made one bad play and I continued to not scoop the ball cleanly. How can I get rid of all of the nerves after I make a bad play?

During the season it shows why Baseball is a team game. A perfect example is the Oregon State Beavers and the NC Tarheels. In the final series one of the Beavers made a costly error. After the half of the inning every one came off the bench to pat the guy on the back and tell him to keep his head up. The NC guy did almost exactly the same error, the team stayed on the bench and avoided the player. Its all about how your team responds to mistakes. You need to be a part of a positive culture on your team.

The Beavers won their Second world series in a row that year.

What I would do is get some friends......

Go to your position...... have the friends throw grounders to your left, right, and directly to you......

Get in the mindset of moving on contact. You need to react more instead of thinking.

Also using a tennis ball and a wall. Bounce the ball off the ground and hit the wall at different speeds. start with slow speeds first.

Key is reacting and not thinking.

The Mental Game of Baseball (by Dorfman and Kuehl) is a great resource. Cheap used copies available on amazon.com. It's easy to read, good for all ages and disciplines, not just baseball.

If you beat yourself up then it's not going to help. Just visualize you being the best player and making every play and then you wil do good. Visualizing and saying things will make them come true

Forget the error. It's too late to do anything about it.

Concentrate on making the next play. Remember, no one fields 1.000.

being a varsity ss i know how it goes and i've learned that the easiest way to get back in the game is to just shake that last play off, not be afraid to mess up, and relax.

  • just forget the mistake

and you have to practice that because if you linger on the mistake its going to effect your preformance

focus 100% on the play your on not the next one or the previous one

  • just forget it an continue playing. visualizing helps too, just keep playing hard
