To focus team efforts on goals other than stroking egos and making any 1 team member stand out more than the others.
Keep your eyes on the TASK, not your co-worker, and things will come out fine....

From personal experience I'd suggest a cost-benefit analysis in conflict situations. What's the cost to you if you give in on a particular issue? Would that be outweighed by the benefit of the goodwill earned? Pick your battles very carefully.
