    you might try and find a local shop

    that makes trophies etc.

    yes, it is, they use a laser. I found a family owned hardware store in my town that is offering laser etching of photos into wood, metal, plexiglass and glass. It was not expensive, and they let me watch it being done. A detailed photo took a while. google it, and I am sure you will find this offered in your city somewhere. Laser etching.

    A photo can be converted to a sandblasting mask and then etched/blasted onto metal or other substances. Talk to people who do decorative sandblasting and monuments.

    Its called photolithography and your newspaper is printed that way any good signwriter or print shop would be a place to start.
