I haven't got any bicarbonate of soda, so can I use baking soda instead?
Thanks.
Sorry I meant baking powder!

Baking soda IS bicarbonate of soda, so it will work fine.
Bicarbonate is just the chemical/scientific name.

Yes you cn but you have to use 4 times the amount of baking powder for the baking soda
so if the recipe says 1 teaspoon b. soda you would use 4 teaspoons b.powder

I can't tell what you are substituting from the question. Baking powder has baking soda, sodium phosphate(or aluminum phosphate?) and corn starch in it. It is about half the strength of baking soda alone because of the corn starch.
If you use Baking soda for baking powder, it will be a very sad thing. It will taste bad and it won't have the right texture. if you are using baking powder for baking soda, then double the amount and cross your fingers.
If you end up buying baking powder, look for brands that do not have aluminum in them. Clabber Girl is good.

baking powder doesn't work as well as baking soda. I tried it in a recipe and my mixture went in the bin because it doesn't work
