What are the wire definitions for installing my ceiling fan?

Ok I'm trying to install a ceiling fan. I'm trying to hook it up to a two switch system. I don't think thats right but what i mean is that the room's light switch has two of them on the same panel. Now coming out of the ceiling are: a black wire, a red wire, a bare wire, a white wire, and a green wire. 5 wires. Now the ceiling fan has a blue wire, a black wire, and a white wire. The base of the ceiling fan has a green wire coming off of it. Now I know that the green wire coming off of the fan's base is a ground. I also know that the white wire is the neutral. I'm pretty sure the bare wire coming out of the ceiling is the ground but I also thought that the green one coming out of the ceiling was ground as well. So I am confused on which wires to hook up to what wires.

Update:

Well I looked into it and it seems that the blue controls the lights, the black controls the fan, and the white is neutral. That's for the fan. And for the ceiling box i found out the green and bare wire are ground. So maybe i should hook up the white to white, the blue to red, the black to black, and the green to green AND bare. Any electricians out there?

Update 2:

The bare wire is copper.

the green wire from theceiling fan is ground and gets hooked up to the green wire from the ceiling.the black and red wire supply power from the switch when it is turned on and get hooked up to the black and blue wire from the ceiling fan.it doesn't matter wich one is hooked up to wich.the white is nuetral and gets hooked to the white wire from the ceiling.this goes back to the nuetral bar in the circuit breaker box.the bare wire is ground and goes directly to the circuit breaker box.if the bare wire is silver it should be hooked up to the box in the ceiling so that the box in the ceiling it self is grouned [if bx cable was used].if the bare wire is copper then the ground wire from the fan is hooked directly to the ground wire from the ceiling[if romex cable was used].

Okay - that sounds a little odd ... surely the landlord (are you renting?) has responsibility to provide approved and safe dwelling? If you own, then your local council will check, and help rectify potentially unsafe wiring. Put simply, the Earth is there just to protect you from being shocked if the casing of the fixture should become live. That's why the green/Earth usually attaches to the light fitting, and not to the light itself. To answer your questions: 1. You can install it. It's a little dangerous, but how low is the ceiling? If it's way high and unlikely to be accidentally touched, then no real issue. Also if the casing is plastic, not metal, you'd be safer. But I guess the fan veins are metal(?) 2. You can make an earth by running an earth wire to the fitting from any other Earthed location. Typically all the metal fittings in the bathroom will be Earthed - so radiators / pipes / bath / shower. If you have access to enough of the ceiling spaces to run that wire, you can make an Earth. How easy depends on the construction of the ceilings and the layout of the apartment. Personally, I'd just install without an Earth. If you install it correctly, there's little chance of you needing the 'back-up' of the Earth connection.

I just installed the same system last weekend. The green is the ground wire, sometimes there are two greens in the fan, one for the fan, one for the light, just tie them together with the green ceiling wire and cap off with a nut. The white is the ground wire, connect those two. Now the red hot wire should go to the blue light wire on the fan and the black wires go together for the fan. That should do it. Good luck.

you got it with your update. the black and red wires are usually "hot" meaning they have power. The white is the neutral. The green and bare wires are usually ground. It sounds like someone ran "14-3" wire up there speciffically for a fan.

Black to black, red to blue, white to white, green to green. Bond or screw the bare wire to the ceiling box.

    Turn on switch, enjoy fan.
