    That's a pretty broad question.

On one end, there are places like SpectroLab producing cells with ever record-breaking efficiencies. However, these exotic multilayer cells are so expensive, they're only used for applications off the earth.

On the other end, there are companies trying to make photovoltaics cost efficient. First Solar, for example, is making solar cells without using silicon. There is a shortage of solar grade silicon at this time, so FSLR's stock is doing very well. Ironically, unrefined silicon is one of the most common elements on earth, and the materials that First Solar uses are not as common.

Then there are other companies trying to improve the production process of conventional silicon cells, to be able to use a lower grade of silicon. SunTech, an already established player in the business, is an example of such a company, with their "Pluto" technology.
