use explorer and try and find the file. Make sure the view is list and you can see the file extension

Is the file a excel 2003 or 2007 file?

if its a 2003 rename the extension to .xls. If its a 2007 it be something different, but if its a 2003 file so you need to open it as a 2003 which is xls.

if the file was an original 2007 file then you are in deep s**t.

Sounds like you have changed the default templates and saved the template in a corrupt state.

you need to find the template and delete it, Excel will automatically make a new one on re opening.

open excel and hit Fn1 key, type in edit template. There should be two, one for the book, and one for the sheet. The help should tell you their names and where to find them. Use explorerer and find both and delete them.

If your file in question was not saved as a template extension then it should open to the new default template and should make sense/ if your file in question was saved as a template (determined by the file extension) then it may be lost. you could rename the extension from template to file before you delete the default templates , may be able to save some data.

    good luck.
