new seat cover installation 1980 firebird, how do you get the new ones on?

I've got new seat covers for my 80 firebird, original type lombardy cloth with hobnail inserts. I'm finding it almost impossible to get them streched over the seats and affraid I'm going to damage them. Can anyone offer some tips or tricks of the trade to help?

Make sure that you are working in a warm room, and the seat covers are at least to room temperature (70-80 degrees). Because you're having a tough time getting them on, I assume you have new seat foam installed. They are a pain in the butt to get them slid over the foam. Take a plastic garbage bag (get one that's close to the size of the seat back) and slide the garbage bag over the foam. Then slide the seat cover over the garbage bag. The bag acts like a lubricant allowing the seat cover to slide easier. You can leave the garbage bag in there ( nobody's going to see it) Or you can pull it out if you think you have to. If you still have problems, warm the seat cover with a hair dryer so it will stretch and be a little more flexible. Don't get it too hot... just warm. You might also try turning the seat cover inside out, and work it onto the seat from the top, compressing the foam as you roll the seat cover over it. Make sure that the tabs that fasten the metal inserts are flattened and covered with a scrap of cloth so they don't dig into the foam.

most of the answers I read were pretty right on When I did my last set I put them in the dryer on-LOW HEAT with two damp(not soaking wet) bath towels.

It was almost as much fun as having a root canal on "no anesthesia day" at the dentist.

BUT!!! when I finished and things looked good, I knew it was worth the pain.

We use a steamer to soften the material... you can work it easier that way. Without a steamer... I have seen people put the covers in their clothes dryer for a while to soften the material up through the heat.

    - Good Luck!
