Lots of bumps on dog fur?
I was petting my dog earlier today, and as I ran my hand over him I felt some bumps. I separated some of his fur so I could see what it was, and I saw something that looked like a scab that had been picked off? There is no blood or hair loss, and he has lots of bumps all up and down his spine. He's not scratching them to my knowledge.
What do you think it is?

Okkies if it's not just the bumps of the spine that you are feeling then you must go to the vet as not even a vet could tell you for sure what it is. It could just be a fatty deposit but it could be serious. I really favor a fine needle aspirate, in which a regular hypodermic needle and syringe are used to obtain a small sample from the lump which can be examined under the microscope. This often gives a strong indication of what the lump is and is an easy test for the pet to tolerate.
Please get this lump checked by your vet!

I have had similar problems with my 2 year old dog, her lumps were towards her tail and the skin looked very dry. She has had the same problem time and time again and we figured out that there was a plant in the yard she was allergic to. Have a good look out the back for any weeds. To fix this problem you should take your dog to the vet as they might want to take a skin scraping to make sure she does not have mites or any other problems. We were given different types of medication that cleared it up, but some of these medications can affect the dogs bones if taken for long periods of time. So the other week I thought I would try a natural cream from the health food shop, and it worked. So if this problem comes back have a chat to your local health food shop. Best of luck

It sounds like flea scabs, esp. if the bumps are close to the tail or behind the ears, they can look like little scales.
You can get a little flea comb pretty cheap, when you run it through your dog's fur you should be able to see reddish black flea dirt and eggs.
If the bumps are slightly larger than that it could be the beginnings of mites, such as demodex (mange).
If you don't find fleas and are unable to treat it with a topical flea treatment you'll want to take him to the vet for a skin scraping.
good luck : )

Could be hives. If they are still there in the morning i would consult a vet just to be sure.

By any chance do you have a Schnauzer. I have one. They are prone to eczema. A medicated shampoo will help get rid of it.
