ford escort 99?

Question

So I was driving down the highway and the speed started going down to 50 so I stepped on the gas and it just made a reving noise but kept going down so I pulled over to the side of the highway and as soon as I stopped it died it didn't overheat the battery didn't die i wasn't out of gas no check engine light came on it didn't make any clanking noises nothing just died i have oil everything 

so yesterday I changed the fuel filter still didn't start I changed the spark plugs and wires then when I tried to start the car it acted like it was about to turn over but didn't 

I'm not really good with cars i have no idea what is wrong with it any ideas? and I know it's not the fuel pump i tested that

If it wanted turn over after you changed the plugs and wires. Sounds like maybe you the spark sequence or the distributor maybe.

99 model could be the timing belt.  Take the oil cap off and have someone rotate the engine.  Look through the oil fill hole and see if the cam shaft is turning.  Not much but a place to start.

Check for fuel and spark if you have these it should run!! Does the engine turn over etc... Look at the oil there should be no white sludge in the cap!!!

You need to check if the car is getting spark, also you catalytic convertor could be plugged.

snapped timing belt...... got spark? bad coil/ignighter
