I was in the same situation a month ago. One of my wisdom teeth was decayed. The doc said it has to go for root canal. But I was so scared of root canal procedure that I just asked the doctor to fill the cavity without drilling it. She warned me saying that was not the right thing to do. But I just took a chance. She went ahead and just filled the cavity without drilling i.e. without removing the decay. And let me tell you, it started hurting like HELL within few hours itself. The whole thing got inflammed and the pain started spreading to the entire mouth. I could barely open my mouth. I could not speak forget about eating. My cheek was swollen. I literally ran to the doctor and asked her to do the root canal or whatever it takes to stop the pain.

And because of the inflammation even the root canal could not be done immediately. I was put on antibiotics for 3 days! And......those 3 days....were hell!!

The root canal procedure was also very very painful. I almost screamed & cried during the procedure. It was painful, in my case, may be because of the complications due to infection & inflammation. It took 4 sittings for the procedure to complete.

Anyway, the moral of the story is - don't...just DON'T fill the infected cavity without having the decay drilled. I know it is painful. But it is better to bear that small pain of drilling than going through lot more complications/pain later.

Don't worry. Everything will be okay with you.

The cavity is on hiatus when you get a sealant. But eventually, sealants wear off from brushing your teeth and eating, grinding, etc. So, at that point the cavity underneath will start to show. And if not taken cared of, it can resume from its hiatus and continue to infect your tooth.

Most likely if the cavity is deep, they would have to give you root canal which isn't bad at all with anesthetics. They completely drill out the cavity and then place a sealant on top your tooth as if nothing has ever happened. :)

When the dentist drills out a cavity, they are drilling out the decayed (rotting) part of your tooth. If your dentist doesn't drill it out, the cavity will continue to decay & will spread until your tooth rots.

Food for thought: Please don't be offended when I ask this, but: If the cavity formed without the dentist's help, why then would it magically "stop" growing after it's reached the point where you say to yourself "hey, my tooth hurts, I need a dentist"? Just a thought, Not meant to be insulting.

The tooth need to be drilled because 1. The decayed portion of the tooth should be removed. 2. The filling needs undercut to be retained in place. 3. The shape of the filling is decided by the dentist to avoid displacement. So shaping is a must. So always the tooth needs drilling.before filling

An xray could have desperate the quantity of deterioration/length of hollow area earlier the drilling started.... jointly because it ought to have regarded like a 'extensive' hollow, as in step with your tongue, do no longer forget that your tongue is gentle, and could make something and each thing seem better than that's... If it aches for better than a pair of days, circulate returned to the dentist.. the filling ought to desire to be adjusted, or maybe the decay became too on the fringe of the nerve, or pulp, and that's aggravated. if so, you would be placed on antibiotics.... and could want root canal medical care interior the destiny.... ultimate of success to you~

Was there a filling there already? If so & no decay it will be fine, but you can't leave decay there & put filling on top of it!1 Doc W

Then he's a bad dentist. Go back and tell him to check, and if its still there do it again.

it will be improper to do it leaving the infected and bad component in and the filling would not hold
