Please help.?

I’m trapped in a dungeon with a hideous monster. He looks like a mother in law from hell and in a bad mood too. He placed 12 bags of gold before me with 24 ‘identical’ coins in each bag. One of the bags contains coins that are all 2g under or all 2 g over the rest of the coins are identical in weight. These coins seem to weigh about 70g each. He was ‘kind’ to provide me with a precision digital scale (0 - 25,000g +/-.01g). I have to make one measurement to determine which bag contains these nonstandard coins. I could try my luck by taking one chance out of twelve, but for some reason I don’t feel lucky today.

How do I do it? PLEASE H-E-L-P!!!!

Update:

anil bakshi,

Thank you for your words of wisdom, however my captor was not impressed. Please help.

Update 2:

Maxwell,

Thank you for saving my life.

Well done my friend!

I’m free!

My dear M&M,

Hmmm... Frankly a good lipstick, when properly applied, tames the savage beast in me too ;-) and I’m a sucker fro a happy endings.

H&K

Remo,

Yes Maxwell got it! I wonder have you ever seen “a mother in law from Hell”?

BTW I had no wine on me. Let’s make rule #237 - One should never leave home without a good bottle of wine!

    Hi Edward

Line the bags up in order from 1-12

Take 1 coin from bag 1.

Take 2 coins from bag 2.

Take 3 coins from bag 3.

Take 4 coins from bag 4.

Take 5 coins from bag 5.

Take 6 coins from bag 6.

Take 7 coins from bag 7.

Take 8 coins from bag 8.

Take 9 coins from bag 9.

Take 10 coins from bag 10.

Take 11 coins from bag 11.

Take 12 coins from bag 12.

Now weigh all the coins that you took out of the bag. If they were all 70 grams, then the scale would read 5,460 grams. But you'll get a different measurement than that.

Plug the measurement you get into here:

[5,460grams - (scale reading)] / 2g = Bag number that has nonstandard coins

ps. I hope I didn't mess that up, sir. I have a big assignment due in 2 hours that I haven't even started on. Gotta run.

Best of luck to Maxwell! Now that's Y/A addicition for you! :)

Right... my suggestion would be for me to bravely enter the dungeon, with total confidence, and lend the mother inlaw from hell lookalike monster that vanilla flavoured lipstick we previously conversed about. Overcome with awe at the depth of both colour and flavour, the monster would surely be only too pleased to accept it as an exchange for your good self, and the gold. We could then walk out of the dungeon into the sunlight, leaving said monster to play with his new toy, and all would live happily ever after.

    I do love a happy ending, don't you? ;)

"Mother in law from hell?" lol. I can think of worse. How did you get into such a precarious position. Bet you could bribe him with a bottle of wine. Much better than guessing

I think Maxwell has the right answer.
