Are there any ways managers can ensure employee pension plans are protected?

I know when pension plans fail, employees start to worry. Are there any ways managers can ensure that these pension plans of their employees are protected?

Pension plans should be structured so that pension funds are moved off of company balance sheets and held by a third-party custodian, like 401(k) plans.

new jersey is right...but it should go further.

The pension plan or other defferered compensation should be managed by 3rd party and contributions made off the books too.

There should be active discouragement of purchasing stock of the company. (you already have invested your time and paycheck with them, dont bet your future too).

You'll find that the retirement picture appears a lot less "rosy" when done this way compared to what the Co. is pitching to you, but it is safer and more stable.
