Thank you for inviting me to answer this question. You could ask some adults with autism to give you one-liners for your display. Don't forget to ask people who use facilitated communication, as well as people who are verbal. You can print the sayings and cut them out to add to the display, or have a laptop with a Powerpoint presentation, or a slide show of the sayings, moving from one slide to another. If you have pictures, please use adults as well as children. Many people do not understand that it is lifelong.

My son typed something really neat for a public appearance we did recently. "I WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW WE ARE SMART. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. HELP US TO HELP YOU. I’M GLAD WE GET TOGETHER TO SHARE FOOD AND FEELINGS."

editing: Thanks for your kind words, Robert. I forgot to mention, pictures of people enjoying their lives would be good too. I'm sure your state has wonderful situations like the one my son has found, at http://recycledbirdhouse.com/ . Feel free to look at their "behind the scenes" and workshop photos. I volunteer there once a week and it has been such a blessing in my life to work for these gentlemen.

The two responses prior to mine were great! Especially, Kacky.

I just have one idea - make sure to include the articles or books that have been written by individuals with autism. There about books about autism or teaching people with autism.

However, to me the text that had the most impact for me was reading the writing of some one who has autism. It is my belief that this helps you to understand autism. A greater understanding is gained when you obtain the information from the source. It is my desire that my son who has autism where he will begin to communicate his inward feelings and express them verbally or in writing. Thus you gain a glimpse of what intelligence, beauty, talent, observations, etc. are within.
