look at all the variations of what is considered to be poetry and you would have to say yes it is. Don't let the haters detract you from the truth because they think that poetry is a certain slant of writing governed by their dated philosophies.

ask anyone who claims it isn't to explain why.

Rap is actually a form of hip-hop so they're both kind of the same thing yes, hip-hop music is categorized under hip-hop culture. I agree that it is a form of art; when I hear the word hip-hop-, rap & and upbeat songs is not actually what comes to mind. I think of the whole style and image it's portrayed on people that's based on fashion, art, culture and of course music. For the people that think hip-hop/rap should not be part of music; they need an exact reason why it shouldnt be, like all music- hiphop is made up of meanings/and thought expressed by the artist onto lyrical flow that's like saying why is metal considered music?- they're not singing either when theirs electric guitars blasting out behind them QFACT: Jazz is part of the bebop culture. Hip hop is a cultural movement built largely around the music genre of hip hop music, which developed in New York City during the 1970s primarily among African Americans and Latino Americans. Hip hop's four main elements are rapping (or MCing, from Master of Ceremonies), DJing, graffiti writing, and breakdance. Other elements include beatboxing, hip hop fashion, and hip hop slang. Since first emerging in the Bronx and Harlem, the lifestyle of hip hop culture has spread around the world. -Hip-hop's not dead

Yes. Rap is the most poetic form of music out there. Rap has good storytelling, multi-syllable rhyming, a nice flow, etc... I could go on and on about how poetic Hip Hop is.

Yes it is and here is why!

In hip hop music, people individually and separately vocalize over beats, instrumental tracks, usually consisting of repeated phrases. Hip hop is considered an important development in the history of music because, for the first time, non-tonal aspects of speech, its emphasis and lyricism, are the most identifiable aspects of vocalizations. Also, syncopation and abstract rhythms are being used in ways never before. In addition, technological manipulation of sound is being used as never before. Hip hop began as an idea during the 1970s, became a mainstream genre during the 1980s, and an internationally popular genre during the 1990s and 2000s.

Yes - lyrical content in Hip Hop music is usually much better than that in other genres.

Yes!!! people are quick to shoot down rap because of lyrics about women and guns. If anyone has ever listened to people like Nas, 2Pac, Lupe Fiasco they would realize that there is more than it than you hear at clubs. The lyrics about drugs and guns are just what they grew up around. Most rappers that are lyricsist dont glamorize guns, girls, and drugs but rather tell about the negative effect it has.

Well, Hip Hop is a form of music not poetry. But Rap is poetry, yes. Rap is not really considered music in the musical world because it lacks the major parts of music, harmony, melody. The thing that makes it even thought of as music is the rythem and beats put in the background made usually by a synthesizer and bass drums. Hope that helps....
