my son is sick, please help?
my son is 10 months old and i to take him to the doctor this afternoon because his temp was anywhere form 99-103 when he got up. the doctor told us that he has influenza A. which i don't understand why because he's had his flu shot this year. he looks so miserable, i don't know what to do to help him and make him feel better. the doctor gave us a prescription for a nebulizer to help with his really bad cough. i've been giving him some Motrin to help with his fever. but he still looks miserable. any advice on what i should do to help him feel better and get him back to his normal happy smiley self. this is my first kid so i don't really know if i'm doing things right.

Use a nasal aspirator to remove mucous from his nose and mouth. He'll [probably scream and cry but whatever you can get out in the process will do him good.
Sit in the bathroom with the hot water on and let the steam help loosen up the congestion. Also, a humidifier works just as well.
Baby vicks is also wonderful to help them sleep.
good luck and hope your little guy feels better soon

Tylenol and motrin work in 2 different ways so you can rotate them every three hours (mother of 18 month old with recurring ear infections). Making sure to keep the same kind six hours apart, but do not do this for more than a day or so, Pain reliever can still ruin your baby's liver and intestines if taken to much too long, he may be miserable but it will pass (see the bigger picture). Make sure he does not get dehydrated. Just out of curiosity did they give him both shots? First time flu vacc is supposed to be two shots 4 weeks apart. I feel your pain having a feverish sickly baby breaks your heart! Good Luck!

I'm sorry your baby is sick. It always breaks my heart when my children are sick. He probably does in fact have the flu, or some other strain of cold virus. The vaccine certainly can't and doesn't protect against all strains of the flu, just the strain that is most common. Try giving him a warm bath and keep the motrin/tylenol alternation. Cuddle with him a lot. He'll feel better in a couple days.

the flu shot is not always 100%. The way it works is every year a new strain of the flu comes around, thats why you need to get a flu shot every year, however, sometimes there is a strain of the flu that the doctors did not predict, therefor, your shot does not protect against it. The flu shot is a good idea to get, it just doesn't protect all the time. Sorry.
As for making him feel better, just keep giving him the medicine to help with his fever, cool (not cold) baths or sponge baths, and allow him to do anything that's comforting, (snuggle, pacifier, rest). Youll just have to bare with him until he's better.

ok, well even though he had the flu shot, he can still get the flu, just supposadly not a sbad, but a bit of advice - this year a lot of new strains have come out
the best thing you can do is keep track of his temp - if it spikes higher, then take him to the ER or call the doctors
Give him a nice luke warm - tepid bath
he will probably shake, but thats ok - thats the fever, and the bath wil help.
instead of just Mottrin - give tylenol every 4 hours and sneak in one dose of motrin during the day..plenty of fluids = popsicles, pedialite, and any fluids you can get hom to drink, but no milk...
milk actually makes the bodies temperature rise and causes a lot more phlem build up.
do not cover him with many clothes, keeo blankets off of him
and just comfort him

He will feel better soon, but there is not much you can do until then but keep him hydrated by feeding him his bottles of formula or breastmilk, and or water or pedialite...Hold him and comfort him. You are doing all you can with the motrin and the nebulizer. Unfortunately, the flu shot does not protect against all strains of the flu :-( Poor little guy!

I would continue the Motrin to help with the fever and also use that nebulozer as much as they say you can. My aunt had a flu shot too but she had the flu and the doc told her that it is a different kind of flu than the shot covered. Here's a little more info as to why he got the flu anyways. I hope he is feeling much better soon!

FYI-the flu shot doesn't prevent all the different strains of it.
And the first (and last time) I gave my son the flu shot he got it BAD! Never had another since I never got him the shot.
Anyhoo, unfortunately there is nothing much you can do other than to let it run its course... Make sure he is staying hydrated with Pedi-A-Lite or even Gatorade.
He'll get over it eventually, it just sucks for a short time
and lots of cuddles!!

You have to give him lots of love. Medicine will do it's part but you have to do yours too! Rotate between Motrin and Tylenol but only as you're using one. Every six hours. Hope he gets better soon. When my son got sick around that age, it took about 3 weeks for him to even look better. Good Luck!!!!

It is a different strand of flu then what the flu shot was for. Keep him hydrated with pedialyte if he coughs a lot take him in the bathroom and steam him out ( turn on shower to hot and sit on the toilet for a while). I always sat up in bed with my babies and let them sllep on my chest while I slept propped up on pillows. Or put a pillow under one side of his mattress so he is not laying flat. Just love him a lot that is what he needs.
