Throwing shoes over the telephonepost line? Why?

Why are people throwing tied up shoes over the telephonepost lines crossing the street? What's that about?

Update:

WOA! And I just thought it was an innocent thing too, maybe in the regions of throwing a coin in the Fontana di trevi in Rome: you'll always come back.

The ppl above say its a gang thing. I didnt know that. I just did it because I knew that 5-10 years later they would still be there! (and they are on the street that I grew up on!!!)

Sadly, it means that there is a drug dealer living near by. I used to live in Memphis, TN and there were a lot of shoes on telephone lines.

It originally had to do with marking gang territory but now I think that it's just a fad.

that spot is where someone's friend got shot.

so they put the shoes up there.

kinda like pouring out some of your drink on the ground...

My friends and I did it after we bought new pairs of shoes. No reason we were just kids.... I had no idea it had any deep meaning to it.

I think it's something to do with marking gang territory or something. Similar to something animals might do.

Have wondered this too. I see it all the time-seems kind of stupid to me.
