How do people think Israel should be responding to the daily rocket attacks from Gaza?

Over the past week, we've heard many comments stating what Israel should NOT be doing in response to rocket attacks from Gaza. What SHOULD Israel do?

More than 180 rockets have been fired at southern Israel in the past week, including at least 20 Iranian "Grad" missiles.

On Wednesday, an hour after Israel opened up Gaza crossings for shipments of humanitarian goods, IDF soldiers found bomb-making ingredients packed in sacks marked "sugar" & in other donated food supplies waiting to pass through the border crossings from Israel to Gaza, & chemicals in a sealed container - intended for use in Kassam rockets,

The Israeli Security Cabinet have just adopted a resolution to coordinate with Egypt to topple Hamas, while continuing to negotiate with Mahmoud Abbas.

According to sources in Ramallah, Qatar has been donating millions of dollars per month to help relieve the poverty suffered by Gaza residents – but Hamas have stolen much of it to buy advanced weaponry - is this moral?

Update:

tuddy: I'm curious about your response: why DO people have to wait at checkpoints, do you think? And exactly who is "walled in" & by whom? Isn't it true that an Egyptian minister said last week that any Gazans who attempt to break into Egypt will have their legs broken by the Egyptian police or army? Isn't it also true, that if Israel took Gaza from Egypt during the 6 day war, the people in Gaza must be Egypt's responsibility? Are the Gazans in fact Egyptians, & if so, why doesn't Egypt provide them with food & water & electricity? (Yasser Arafat was born in Cairo, after all).

Shouldn't Hamas be bombing Egypt, as they really belong to Egypt, & the Egyptians must surely care about their fellow Muslims! We can't really expect people in another country (Israel) to provide for them, can we?

If Hamas are using aid from Qatar to buy weapons, how is it Israel's fault?Hamas in Gaza are using Iranian Grad missiles, smuggled in when the barrier into Egypt was broken through.

Update 2:

Karma Man - thanks for your answer; can you fill me in a bit more? What were those agreements, exactly?

Update 3:

GOGO yubari - and how do you think the other rockets etc came in? Through underground tunnels! Or hidden in sacks marked "sugar", or "for humanitarian aid". You'll be sorry, you know. I don't know where you live, but wherever it is, it stands a chance that one day you'll wake up to Sharia law, and you'll be murdered - sorry- be 'honour killed' for so much as breathing the same air as a man.

The missiles that have been landing in Israel this week are from Iranian made Grad rockets, whether you like it or not. And now I shall report you for abusive language

Update 4:

Scrooge: Are the UN not aware of the rocket attacks on Sothern Israel, do you think? Admittedly, they have only been going on for 7 years, and at the moment, a rocket attack is launched on civilians approximately every 30 minutes. The biggest problem for the IDF, is in going into Gaza to blow up the rocket launchers, as the terrorists place them in dense centres of civilian population - so thay can complain to the world when a civilian is injured or killed. The UN should be addressing this practice & codeming it. The UN should also be condeming the practice of Gazans using teenagers to move the launchers around. You see, in spite of the belief that to die in what they consider to be a 'Holy War', & in spite of the belief that they will receive 72 virgins apiece when they ascend to Heaven as martyrs, they are basically all cowards - hiding behind women and children.

Update 5:

How about taking 5 minutes to watch this:

That an unbalanced person (answerer) here should refer to deadly rocket attacks on Israeli civilians as "comical" speaks volumes about double standards and lack of understanding.

Is it conceivable that the Arab supporters here don't understand what is going on? That the radical Muslims are intentionally targeting innocent Israeli citizens, firing from Arab populated areas.

And that they don't care if their own people get killed, as long as they can inflict damage of the Jews?

And the Israelis are trying half-heartedly to make them stop?

Well, the Israel Army is going to have to become a bit more forceful to stop the unwarranted attacks on their population.

Israel should declare an ultimatum: For every rocket or mortar bomb launched against Israeli civilians by the Muslim terrorists, Israel will launch two rockets against the Muslim population.

See how long before the Hamas comes begging for a ceasefire.

Maybe they should actually put a plan in place that isn't engineered to fail, and is so unreasonable as to make the Palestinian leadership reject it. And CARPET BOMB?? You have no heart or soul do you? Carpet bomb an area that is 3/4 young people???? Maybe you would like it if someone carpet bombed you? And WHY should America get involved? Oh no, this is your show, America owes you Absolutely NOTHING. Grow a pair is what the Israeli government should do, and sort out their own problems without using the USA as their own personal body guard. And go ahead and report the answer, you would only do it because you are a coward, and don't want anyone to know the truth. Typical. -------- Maya and Dalia, I am so sorry about your situation. Maya, your post broke my heart, I could tell you were pleading from the soul, and it made me really cry. I hope you will be blessed both of you, and that your future will be one that your children will be able to enjoy. xxxx -----Just because the food going into Gaza is rationed by the Israeli's does not mean it is coming directly from them, that isn't their food, it is from the aid being sent from around the world. Israel gives only enough of that aid, and sporadically at that, to barely keep those people alive. It is a form of torture. So get real, I feel sorry for Sam, I hope he has more compassion than that.

Shouldn't you be asking about what the poor gazan people will do when Israeli soldiers kill their children, women and men? The army call it "collateral deaths"-a load of old toss. If it was collateral then why do they fire their bullets in such a confined space. Ive had enough of no-one speaking up for the palestinians....as if they are sub-humans. Take a look at what happened this week...8 people in Israel die and it reches front page news and mass hysteria by Europe and America...and 150 people in Gaza die (children and women inc.) and not a peep from the media. I think its actually sickening that this world is soooo biased.

Legally, the Israelis have the right to respond to such attacks as attacks by another country, and the legal response is a declaration of war, and the military response should be mass artillery and air retaliations.

However, Israel is limited in it's response options, by political constraints and goals, including the attempt to reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians and the fact that the world expect the Israelis to suffer and limit their response, and Israel is attentive to global public opinion, it is by no means similar to Arab countries, such as Sudan, who totally ignore protests of the public against such genocide actions like Darfur.

Therefore the only path open to the Israelis is harrasement response, limited in scale, hoping the Gaza population will rebel against Hamas, although there is very little hope of that, since Hamas uses arms to control Gaza, and any objection from within is met by bullets.

I think that Israel, as a legitimate nation state, has a duty to protect their citizens from military attacks.

Strictly Speaking’s view of rocket assaults on innocent civilians as “comical” is only one of the maladapted views he displays.

Quickly, before he makes it private, go see Strictly Speaking q & A history of rabid bigotry directed to all people of color. One “question” disgustingly asks How many poor brown people's lives is an American citizen worth?

He has questions and answers that reveal he is an admitted Holocaust denier and rabid antisemite.

I doubt he cares about the Palestinian Arabs and their darker skin as evidenced by a number of his comments. He simply hates Jews MORE than he hates Muslims. But make no mistake, he has displayed contempt for both Arab and Israeli in his Q& A history.

His voice carries no meaning because of his self displayed admissions that people of other colors, nations, or beliefs have no meaning to him. I now move on from such wothlessness, to something more important.

No other nation on the planet would have been as restrained as Israel has been in trying to protect its very existence for 60 years of onslaught. Israel dedicated itself to working with the nations surrouding it to establish a peaceful Middle East in it's Declaration of Independence. Look at the charters for Hamas and for the PLO. They are dedicated to elimination of Israel. Only when their desire to build a nation in peace is greater than their desire to destroy Israel will they live and work toward that peace. Israel is ready.

A simple search engine can show anyone interested how many BILLIONS of dollars of humanitarian aide has been given to Gaza AND the West Bank in the past decade. If my home state had half that much our highways and bridges wouldn’t be so dilapidated. They also have a per capita higher percentage of university graduates. The tiny area of Gaza..has 3 universities. Two of them funded by both US and HAMAS aide! The other also receives assistance from the US, but supports Fatah.

When Gaza was a part of Egypt, they were not crying out to the world..."OCCUPATION". Now, when EGYPT threatens to break their legs if they return, they don't cry to the world against Egypt. They cry against the nation state that pulled out and GAVE them millions of dollars of economic infrastructure in the form of greenhouses..PURCHASED by the way with AMERICAN JEWISH DONATIONS as a gesture of goodwill so that the Gazans who had formerly been employed there could now be the people who OWNED their businesses. What did they do? Hours after Israel retreated, Gazans TRASHED the greenhouses! Literally stole food from their own babies with the wages they could have earned shipping produce and flowers all across Europe as those greenhouses had formerly done when owned by Israelis.

I agree with "Strictly" it is comical... that a person should be shot by his enemy, turn around and offer to reload his gun. Sometimes drastic measures cause drastic change. We need a drastic change to get out of this rut. Let's start by doing something very extreme...like not reloading their guns.

So according to 'strictly' the missile attacks are 'COMICAL'?

Really? Do you think the two teenage brothers who are now in hospital after losing, respectively an arm and a leg are LAUGHING?

And how about the families of those Israelis who have DIED? Do you think they're finding the missile attacks 'comical'?

These attacks on Sderot, and now Ashkelon, have been going on for SEVEN YEARS.

Yet no matter how many people are killed and maimed by these missiles, we have people saying they are 'COMICAL'?

Strictly: WOULD YOU SAY THAT ABOUT ANY OTHER NATION BEING ATTACKED?

israel should stop treating palestinians like dirt in their own homeland

how would you feel if you had to wait at checkpoints for hours every day? or if you were walled in inside an area thats only 25 miles long and only 8 miles wide? or if you were deliberately kept hungry? or if you were one of the 50% of people who didnt have access to safe water?

people who think israelis have it tough should go live in gaza for a week

people who say palestinians kill with rockets - maybe if someone gave the palestinians a multi-billion dollar high-tech arsenal, like the US gives israel, they could target their weapons more accurately

israel have such weapons, yet theyve still killed 10 times as many children as theyve lost
