Is Yahoo Q/A the proper forum for asking serious questions about health and diseases?

I have been very surprised at the types of question that are asked on Y/A regarding serious health issues. As a health professional, what is more disturbing is misinformation that is given, in the way of an answer, that can be very dangerous. These questions/answers can be more dangerous then hurting someone’s feelings. What do you think, is this the right forum for these types of questions? Should these questions be allowed and/or should these types of questions or misguided answers warrant a violation.

It CAN be one of them.

As a health professional, you can do a lot of good in the Health section.

When you see misinformation, click the thumb down (if you're above Level 1 -- if you aren't, you will be soon if you keep participating).

If you see abuses of the Guidelines (not just false, but insults or non-answers), use Report It to help get it removed.

Then answer the questions. In your answer, you can explain WHY other answers are wrong, dangerous, whatever, give a correct and helpful answer that explains why you're right, and, in Source, put your credentials -- your job title, perhaps; possibly your years of experience; or just that you are a health care professional. (If you have a blurb you can stash it someone on your computer and just copy/paste it in every time.)

    Yes, they should be allowed.

Not long ago, at the Forum (link, top right of screen -- it's where you can submit suggestions to YA staff), I read a suggestion that they put a disclaimer in the Health section.

False information is NOT grounds for a violation. IF the person is trying to answer or help the asker in some way, then it's a legitimate answer.

Giving clearly dangerous advice ("just saw your leg off" -- stuff like that) IS a violation.

Read the Guidelines (then take the quiz at the Forum.

So, do consider spending some time in the Health section. When someone like you gives a good answer, click thumb up. You can then decide whether you need to reinforce or further support or explain that answer; or just move on.

You can do a lot of good.

BTW, I see other people there who at least claim to be professionals (and seem to me to give good answers -- usually urging the person to be actually SEEN by a professional). So you wouldn't be the only one giving sound advice.

The site needs more experts, though. I urge you to help those askers out.

Oh, and if you know of good places for health questions, you can put those in Source, too.

And, once a question has been resolved, you can add comments, if you feel the "Best" answer is really bad.

I agree with you I`m surprised at the serious questions that are asked..

I don't think they should be violations tho...if this is the only place these people feel they can ask these questions then at least they will get some one to direct them t o professionals...as you say you are a health care professional and I'm sure there are hundreds of others so chances are they will get guided in the right direction..

I think if you're looking for reliable information that you can be certain is correct, Y!A is definitely not the place. Anyone who comes in expecting to talk to an expert on whatever topic is misguided to start with. Misguided questions and answers don't warrant a violation. Who would want to come here any more?

No it is not and the people who make the rules on here don't know how much sense it does not make to think otherwise.
