Borrow an orange off a handy orange-wielding friend so you have 18. Then it will be split 9, 6 and 2.

that totals 17/18 of 17 oranges... do you give the 1/9 then the 1/3 and 1/2?

You round up the decimal answers

½ = 50% * 17 = 8½ = 9

⅓ = 33.3% * 17 = 5 ⅔ = 6

1/9 = 11.1% * 17 = 1.887 = 2

9 + 6 + 2 = 17
