For those who mocked the "either one" answer, check your dictionaries!
American Heritage lists the plural of "pair" as EITHER "pair" or "pairs", then adds a "Usage Note" which ends thus--
"After a number other than one, pair itself can be either singular or plural, but the plural is now more common: She bought six pairs (or pair) of stockings."
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pair
In other words, though "pairs" is NOW more common, it was not always so... and "pair" is still correct.

A pair is one pair, so if you want more than one pair you have to pluralise it with an `s`.

I have 2 pairs of socks. Pairs is used in the plural contents. If you only had one pair it would be "I have one pair of socks", but when you have 2 pairs, it's "I have 2 pairs of socks".
