Can I take my dogs on plane?

It depends upon what airline and also if it's domestic or international. For instance, in Canada, Air Canada won't take any dogs (in the cabin or the hold) while WestJet in Canada will allow you to fly your dog.

Here in the States, I've flown United, Delta, AirTran and JetBlue with my dog (who weighs 17 pounds). There are several issues:

--you will need to have a carrier that fits under the seat (there are a lot of good ones, mine is a Sturdi Bag available at www.cleanrun.com but lots of folks like Sherpa's). And the dog is supposed to stay in the bag and under the seat (though I often pull the bag out from under the seat and put it on my lap and then put my arm or hand inside the bag). But as for taking them out, every airline says that's a no-no and I've had a few flight attendants that have been quite paranoid about my dog (he had to be in the carrier before we got on the jetway, he had to stay under the seat).

--many airlines have a limits on the number of pets that can be inside the cabin (usually it's something like 4). So if 3 other dogs are in the cabin, you'll only be able to fly with one. Though frankly, I've never had anyone check and if your dogs are quiet, you could carry two dogs that small in a carrier and I bet people wouldn't notice.

--there is a fee for each way. It varies from $40 to $75 depending upon the airline and is probably per pet.

--technically you're required to bring a shot record and also a vet's statement within 10 days of travel that the dog is healthy and okay to travel but having flown 7 or 8 times with my dog, no-one has ever asked for those documents.

--all of this is different if you are flying internationally. For instance, flying into Canada, you'll need to prove that your dog has had a recent rabies shot (I believe in the past year).

The best source of information is to contact the airline you want to fly on. All the airline charge for carry-on pets and some airlines do not allow it at all -- US Air, Southwest don't allow pets on board.

Expect to pay about $100 for a carry-on pet. ***

* Warning * You must call the airline and reserve a pet space -- there is no charge until you show up at the airport with the dog, but many airlines only allow 1or 2 dog(s) per cabin in the plane. So there can be 1 pet in first class, and 2 pet in coach and that's it. Make that pet booking asap as you might end up changing your plans if the space is already allocated.

*** NO airline will let you put two dogs in one travel bag -- you can try to get by with it, but if they catch you? Personally I would not risk it. To travel with two dogs in cabin safely, you need two people to travel, and each will have 1 dog in a bag.

Once you know what your travel plans are, get a good travel bag. Over the years I've tried several and found the Sturdi-Bag to be the best. The large size fits under most airline seats (though not on those tiny commuter flights). http://www.sturdibag.com/

Their large bag should be fine for a 9# dog, and you should be fine with the small bag for the 5# dog...but it never hurts to give them a bit more room. These bags are wonderful as unlike many others, the fiberglass rods keep the bag from caving in on the dog.

A health certificate (and be safe, make it within 7 days or less from departure....both ways) is required by all airlines.

If you acclimate your dog(s) to the bag(s) prior to the flight, you should not need to tranquilize him/her. If you feel you need to use anything, the Bach Flower Essences Rescue Remedy should work well. You can find that online or at most Health Food stores.

as far as taking your dogs out of the bags -- it really all depends on the airline staff and the people around you. I've flown with pups in my lap and on the empty seat next to me, and I've flown and not been allowed to pick up the bag from under the seat in front of me. All it takes is one person to have an issue and your dog has to stay on the floor.

The times I've flown with two puppies, I've put them in cargo as excess baggage. They tend to travel better with company - but the airlines have rules about that too. If the dogs are over 6 months of age, they have to be separated. Now, if your dogs look alike??? and don't look old???

contact your airline.. some allow crates that fit under seats.. it will cost you around 80-120 dollars per dog. They each must be in their own crate and can stand, lay, and turn around. if they don't allow them in the cabin sometimes they do with the luggage... however it has to be above 40 degrees and less then 80 degrees. It will cost around 170 dollars per dog, same crate restrictions.

No, once on board the plane, you cannot take your dog out. You could get in big trouble if you do. Not to mention your dog could get hurt. Plus the person next to you might have severe dog allergies.

The carrier must be able to fit under the seat in front of you in order to let the dog with you. If it doesn't fit, it goes down below. If your dogs can fit in one crate that will fit under the seat, you may be able to bring them.

I think they have a special area on the plane for pets and no, I dont think you can take them out. They would even have to be boarded by a flight assistant or somthing. But every airline is different, so I think you might have to call.

Check with the airline you'll be using. Different airlines have different rules about pets. If they do let you take them on board with you its very doubtful that they'll let you take them out of the crate.

U can take them with u but in the end u will have a fee for both dogs and i know for one thing if u fly south west u can bring them.....
