First off you should have left a link for us to see your site. This may have helped as far as giving you a more precise answer.

Google looks for content. I am not talking about a pretty looking site but rather textual content. If you create a number of pages, each with good unique content, this will help.

An active blog on your site will help. However many folks start a blog, and then just give up.

An active discussion forum will create unique search terms as well, ones you would probably not even think about, hence giving you some more top listings.

Be sure your meta tags are relevant to each page.

Yes you do want links from other sites back to yours as well. Just be sure the sites are relevant to yours and are highly trafficked sites.

When creating a new page, first create a directory and name the directory relevant to the subject or main keywords. i.e. for an article on how to make money, http://yourdomain.com/makemoney/index,php

Google adwords is a good program for this but there are several sites that can offer advise in this as well. However be careful as some of these sites may want to sell you a service(this may not be all bad depending on the quality of there service or how much you intend to make on the web site.) I would search and read what others have posted. the big thing to make sure of is that your key word are getting the traffic you want. if not try negative key words to narrow down your audience.for example a wedding band could be a musical group that plays weddings or jewelry for a bride. If you want people to book your band try negative keywords to drive the ring shoppers somewhere else.Google adwords is one of many programs that can help you with this.

1- Add your web site to different directories. Its important to add your web site to different directories as they are one way link and normally directories are high ranked. The most famouse directories are: Yahoo directory, Dmoz, Business.com, botw.org, domaining.in and ...

2- Have a link page in your web site and put a html code on this page. Put your page title: add site,or suggest url and ... as people will find you through google and you will find this way easier.

3- as an example if you got web design company search in google web design+add link

or web design+add url

or web design+suggest site

and you will find lots of relevant web sites that you can do link exchange

4- please please do not use any trick even little! as google is pretty smart and you might get some instant results but its for very short time.

5- You can create link through different blogs and article shops.

6- Link exchange must be with relevant web sites only.

7- its not happening over night and you need to be patient
