Have plenty of time for a puppy and can handle vet bills just not the upfront cost.Just found out my current dog is dieing and would like another before he is gone so can learn from him. Brusky is an awsome dog and think he would be excellent teacher

Look at your local animal control.  I'm 100% positive they will have a lab, an maybe even a springer spaniel.  Shelters adoption fees range from $40 - $150.  (Edit: Seems like adoption fees in Maine are really high.  You may want to look into adopting from a rescue out of state.  Many are willing to transport or meet you halfway.)  However, that is AFTER all vet care, even for the little puppies.  If you were to buy one from a breeder or petstore you would pay just as much, if not more, for little or no vet care.
