If a US resident is stuck in another country because they were mugged and have no money what now?

I have a friend that was on a work site in Abia africa. All his belongings were stolen from him. he needs to come home to us to get more money to pay for the hotel beccaus the manager was nice to let him stay without paying. Is there anything that the US Embassy or some government official can do for him?

If he has no money and no-one in the US can give him any, then the US Embassy will put him on a plane home.

However... they will confiscate his passport until he has repaid his ticket price. (And it will be expensive - they buy a no-notice one way ticket.)

MUCH better to get someone in the US to wire him some money, or FedEx him a new ATM card and put money in his bank in the US.

Apart from anything else, I'm not sure how he expects to get from Abia to Abuja (Where the Embassy is or Lagos (Where the Consulate General is) with no money. Much easier to pick up some cash from a Western Union office in Aba.

Of course it's possible provided the countries allow for that. Some countries, like India, do not allow for duel citizenship. My daughter was born in India, is east Indian and was adopted by my wife and I. Once she took our citizenship then India no longer considers her Indian and she can no longer renew her Indian passport or travel back to the land of her birth without either a visa or a "person of indian birth" card which will cost her a couple of thousand dollars. If the countries allow for it though you can hold as many citizenships as you want. My brother in law holds US, Mexican and Canadian....he was born in the US and now lives here in Canada.

Yes the embassy can definitely help. They may give your friend a commercial airline ticket or offer him/her a ride on a military transport. Hope all turns out well

The U.S. Embassy is the only help he maybe able to get. They will have to verify his identity and then will issue him a new passport.

Yes, contact the US Embassy who may be able to provide limited assistance.

tell your friend to find the national Peace Corps office via the state department. those folks are pretty cool. volunteers will help as much as they can, or at least teach you how to live on virtually nothing.

    hows that for improvising?
