(Dogue de Bordeaux, Cane Corso Italiano)Rare breeds & AKC?

There are people that think these are not breeds because their not AKC. Any one want to set the story straight ?

I do know that there are many dog breeds that are not AKC for various reasons as the examples I gave

Update:

I forgot- I wasn't counting the designer mutts

Update 2:

I knew about the FSS

Update 3:

I love DOG BREED INFO

its a great place to start for breed research (it does include the designer dogs but they are listed as such)

As of July 1st Bordeaux's will have full AKC status in the working group. As of the same date Corsos will be in AKC's miscellaneous class. Once in the misc. class it is usually 1-2 years before the breed is accepted into full recognition. The stronger the parent club and the more dedicated the breeders are the quicker full recognition comes. There needs to be a minimum of 1000 dogs with atleast 3 generation pedigrees before full recognition can be sought after. Considering there are only about 2500 registered Corsos in the US,it might take a little longer than some other breeds.

There are many reasons rarer breeds do not go AKC, there is no one big parent club, breed standard cannot be agreed upon, type cannot be set (there is a breed standard but all of the dogs are very far off of it), or there simply are not enough dogs for them to be recongized.

The last (and biggest probably) is that the owners of these rare breeds do not want thier breed under the spotlight that AKC provides. They do not want the breed that they have worked so hard to maintain (or bring back) to be the new "must have" breed. They do not want their breed to be bred by every BYB looking to make a quick buck off the "trendy" dog that they have spent years and thousands of dollars keeping alive and perfecting.

I know there was a huge debate in the Corso community about whether or not to go AKC but there are some breeds that need that spotlight, if only to prove that they are man eating dogs, but that's a discussion for a diffrent time!

Hopefully this post will be helpful to those who read it.

Yes they are real dogs and real breeds. There are SO MANY breeds out there that the AKC does not accept and yet they are ancient, foundation breeds. Like the TIbetian Mastiffs the AKC just accepted them and they are one of the longest standing breeds. The AKC accepts breeds for various reasons one being the number of dogs plus interest in the breed. But if you watch the Crufts Dog Show you will see so many different and great dogs.

There are a bunch of hoops that they have to jump through to get recognition.

And actually, both those breeds ARE recognized by the AKC: http://www.akc.org/breeds/fss_breeds.cfm However, dogs of these breeds are not AKC registerable.

They are not conformation showable, but they are undergoing the processes to have full recognition by the AKC. In July, the Cane Corso will be able to compete in companion events and the DDB will also be eligible at some point in the near future: http://www.akc.org/reg/fss_companion_events.cfm

The AKC is waiting for them to jump through all those aforementioned hoops and then they will likely be fully recognized and AKC registerable breeds.

FSS lists: "Each of the following breeds has been accepted for recording in the AKC Foundation Stock Service®. The AKC provides this service to allow these purebred breeds to continue to develop while providing them with the security of a reliable and reputable avenue to maintain their records. FSS® breeds are not eligible for AKC registration. Several of the FSS breeds are approved to compete in AKC Companion Events. "

I really don't know.... I have a shih-tzu, and it was only in 1969 they were added to the AKC registry, even though Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breeds of dog (wikipedia) They are believed to be bred from Lhasa Apsos and I don't remember what else.... I think pekingese. They used to be classified as Apsos!

of course these are real breeds. a dog doesnt have to be AKC to be purebred. however controversy comes when you have people saying "oh so cockapoos and goldendoodles are breeds even though they arent recognized by the AKC?" well the answer to that one is NO these dogs arent recognized breeds because they dont have a standard and no one has created steady lines.

Yeah, I had human beings stop and ask that very comparable element whilst my male German Shepherd became into observed. I talked with them merely long sufficient to make certain merely why they might p.c.. merely any dogs that 'regarded' surprisingly to them to be a stud. I have been given the darnedest motives. None suitable because of the fact none of them knew a element approximately genetics, breeding, feeding the pregnant dogs or the domestic dogs or who their industry is for the domestic dogs. i might say to you, a huge certainly not. There are sufficient dogs needing residences interior the international with out greater delivered in from people who don't comprehend a element and don't opt to income. I stored my dogs intact because of the fact i presumed his temperament, configuration, coloring have been incredible. he's German working Line GSD. Little did i comprehend that later in his existence there are very reliable motives for him to not have been bred. you don't comprehend what faults your dogs has in his genetics or what is going to look in his previous age. permit the breeders do the artwork, collect the money, situation how their domestic dogs are being dealt with as quickly as they bypass away. they have the information of ancestors of your dogs's mothers and dads, you do not. you do not choose that. Neither did I and happy I became each and every a style of folk down. I did refer them to my dogs's breeder who ran out of domestic dogs and then directly to the importer of his mothers and dads. I did see your dogs's breed on Petfinders merely at present. Refer them to the breed's rescue in the event that they desire one. no person makes funds breeding dogs. on no account ignore that. Then check out the faces of the dogs in Shelters. Do any look happy? maximum look forlorn and truly some on no account discover their perpetually residing house. do you opt to take accountability for that? i don't.

  • I definatley consider them breeds, if you go on dogbreedinfo.com they show them. and also, puppyfind.com only shows pure bred dogs (unless in the mixed section)
