Homeschoolers: How many group activities do you particpate in every week?

Update:

uh oh. typo.

par-ti-c- i -pate

I do know how to spell. Sometimes it just slips out of my fingers.

Update 2:

I absolutely LOVE all of the opportunities that are available to children that are educated at home. Isn't it wonderful? Every family is so diverse in its choices --- it's so cool that students have the options to follow their own interests instead of being shepherded along from mandated class to mandated class.....

Not many. But the homeschool group where we have lived for a year (and will live for two more) is a bit of a dud. Far too many people in the group are "homeschooling" their preschoolers. That's not called homeschooling; it's called being a parent! lol

Plus, the school-age kids that are in the group are mostly girls who make a big deal about looking for other girls to hang out with.

So, with a 16 year old boy and an 8 year old boy, the group is not a great fit for us.

They do hang out with "schoolies" every day for several hours at a youth/teen center, which is wonderful.

Not sure if this counts, but the boys and I take a martial arts class together twice a week. The class is about 50/50 adults and kids.

At our last base, in a town with an awesome homeschool group, we had three group activities a week.

    1. homeschool group meeting at the park, including PE

    2. teens met for a class

    3. teens met to play cards

tbh, three is my max. I am not the kind of person who likes to run back and forth all over town every day.

We're on kind of a hiatus right now, as we just got done with a play; that was 3-5 days a week with several other homeschool families for 2 months straight. It was a blast, though! We'll probably do another 2-3 of them over the next year.

My son is also very, very active in Scouts - he's doing something for Scouts at least 2-3 days a week, between meetings, service projects, campouts, and other activities.

He does sports as a seasonal thing, which is 2-4 days per week, every week for 3-4 months at a time. He's also active in church activities, so there's at least 2 days a week.

Add playdates, game nights, and field trips to the jumble...there's rarely a day when we're actually at home the whole time. He's out and about with groups of other kids nearly every day of the week, most of the year.

Well, we have boy scouts, cub scouts, girl scouts and art class every week, we have cooking class, craft day, creative movement, and science day one each week of the month.

We have library play date every week, as well as hiking club, and church potluck every friday night.

We did have orchestra and band every week, but the kids are taking a break from that. They're also taking a break from sports, basketball, baseball and soccer (once a week) and Tae Kwon Do (twice a week) during Lent. We've enjoyed having more quiet time, so it's the great debate as to whether or not we'll pick that up again after Easter.

So right now it's eight group activities every week, for a while we had an additional six activities.

My daughter is only 5, but she is very social. We go to story hour at the library every week. Until we moved to a new town last month we were participating in a homeschool co-op each week. We have Sunday School every week.

Then there are some things we do only monthly: 4-H meetings, playing with kids at La Leche League meetings, a parents of small children group at church, and a dad-and-me breakfast playgroup.

In season, we might do soccer or swimming lessons for several weeks in a row.

  • Mondays: Swimming ,Tiakwondo (spelling?)and skating.

    Tuesday: Civil Air Patrol

    Wednesday: Homeschool P.E. and Missionettes

    Thursday: Tiakwondo (Sp?)

Fridays: Twice a month: Lego Club, Water Fairies Club and skating

Then there's the occasional field trip here and there.

Oops I forgot the homeschoolers go skiing 5 or 6 times a year also!!

Too many! LOL... there are enough group activities going on around our area to keep us busy from sun up to sundown 365 days of the year!

We try to keep it to no more than 2 per day, with at least 1 day a week "off" for chores, and maybe 1 day for just the family to go out and do stuff together.

In terms of scheduled activities I usually just have a consistent theater group presence. Two rehearsals a week. The rest of the days I basically do whatever I want, which always has to involve a solid day with my boyfriend.

I don't have Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays free so my social life is a bit cramped. I'm happy with it though.

Don't have any assigned ones yet because my son is finishing up the year in public school, then we will actually start HS.

We have plenty of group activities though.

Fishing and hunting experiences that can lead to Jr. competitions. The kids also have HS sports. The girls have other activities that pertain to them as well as the boys. We are already planning on joining 3 group activities so far!

The groups in our area offer plenty of educational field trips as well, like museums, planetariums, aquariums, camping, and nature centers. We are interested in the nature center because we can not only learn but help wounded or abused animals and lots of other things too. So there is plenty of activities for us to join in on.

My son also has some friends from his time in the public school too. We are close with their parents as well.

Our church also offers lots of group activities too, and they help us with proper biblical teachings.

I will say that I like your question because it does show something "positive" to the ones that are constantly complaining that our children are not socialized!

    Good question!

My daughter attends community chorus and martial arts classes each week. She also visits with friends in the afternoons and on weekends. We go out to eat with a group of friends at least once a week. We do more unscheduled activities than scheduled ones.
