Your BMV should be able to tell you what you need to do in your area, here we just go to the local office with a renewal notice. Until you have it renewed though you should not drive it.

Generally, most DMVs/DOTs now allow you to renew online. You should try looking on your state's licensing agency website.

Absent a current registration sticker, it is technically a violation to operate the vehicle on the road. You may get pulled over and ticketed. If you are in the process of getting the new sticker, sometimes presenting the officer with proof that you are in the process of renewing (a printed receipt of renewal payment, official letter stating that inspection is pending, etc) will get you off with a warning.

It would be helpful if you noted which state and municipality the car is registered in -- as it can vary by jurisdiction.

You shouldn't drive it, go on-line to the DMV and renew it at the end of the transaction you shuould get a print out until you get the new regitration.

You might be able to do it over the phone or just go to the DMV.
