How can I treat gingivitis at home?

Well, I have slight gingivitis, so I would like to know some easy at-home remedies for gums. Today, I've tried a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, brushing and flossing teeth more regularly, but are there any others? Is there a recommended toothpaste I can use for it as well?

I had a problem with gingivitis myself, and the best cure is to use Listerine twice every day. Keep brushing and flossing, of course, but Listerine is what really took care of the gingivitis.

This also works on early periodontis, but you still need to have your hygenists clean your teeth regularly.

Closys antiseptic rinse!!! It's the best, doesn't burn, and tastes like water. You can use Listerine if you want to, but it really hurts, especially sensitive gums. You must buy the Closys at a drug store, as it's not available in most grocery stores. Brushing after every meal, when you wake up, and before you go to bed is essential now that you need to get that gum disease under control.

The toothpaste doesn't really matter in the long run as long as it has fluoride. Basically, they are all the same. I use Crest complete with Scope for fresh breath. I really like it. My dentist gave me a sample of it.

You might want to stroll the toothcare aisle in your local store and read some labels. You might find something that suits you -- whitening, sensitive, etc. When you received your diagnosis for gingivitis, your dentist didn't give you suggestions? If not, call the dentist's office.

Flossing is really important to keep your teeth in good condition. Try to brush with a soft brush after every meal. I was told in school that Listorine mouth wash is not a good product as it takes the saliva out of your mouth and you need that. I do not know for sure if that is true but that is what I was told. I think it is because it contained alchohol. I don't know if it does now or ever did. I am sorry your abusive father is acting that way. Please don't keep it a family secret report him to your teacher or councellor or a good adult you trust. Your Mom and you and any others in the family may be badly effected by this. Report him until someone listens and stops him. He is breaking the law I believe and he needs to be removed or given good councelling until he changes. This is my opinion only. I would hope you find the strength to look for some good help to let people know what he is doing. Please don't let his threats stop you. He must be reported. Anyway I have been told that a soft brush is much better than a hard one. I am guessing your Mom didn't care about you brushing because she is likely depressed due to your father's abuse. I would say that somehow you need to explain to a teacher or a trusted adult that you are in pain and need a dentist. Maybe there is a free clinic you can go to. Ask your teacher. If the teacher doesn't know call your local hospital and ask them if they know of a free clinic. Ask your Mom if she could call the government offices and see if there is a local free clinic for dental care. I hope you try really hard to get an adult to see your problems and get some help. It isn't fair for you to suffer like you are. Remember abuse shouldn't be a family secret it should be reported and stopped. Many many people suffer abuse and it needs to be stopped. Good luck and I hope you find a good adult who will listen and help you. take care I have been told that if a person drinks too much apple juice it can harm the enamel on your teeth. I don't know for sure if that is true but I have heard that a baby that was given a bottle of apple juice a lot ended up with bad teeth. If your Mom and Dad didn't teach you to brush when you were young it is understandable why you didn't brush. It is known that people who don't brush may loose their teeth or some of them as far as I understand so try to start a good routine cleaning and hopefully you can prevent too many problems. Your parents are acting abusive and negligent I feel for not taking you to the dentist. I am sorry but I hope you can get help from a teacher or councellor at school. Maybe they will talk to your parents and then when your parents are talked to they will have to take better care of you. Please don't let your father's attitude stop you or scare you from asking for help. If any danger comes to you or your Mom or anyone else in the familly call 911 do not hesitate. Call and report to save you and your family from harm.

Getting Gum Disease is Self-Inflicted In almost all cases, gum disease is a self-inflicted ailment caused by improper cleaning of the teeth and gums. Food trapped under the gums combines with bacteria to create plaque, a "toxic stew" that irritates the gums and makes them bleed. This colorless film of sticky material containing food particles, bacteria, and saliva attaches itself to the tooth above and below the gum line encouraging advanced gum disease and tooth decay. Then plaque, the "toxic stew," hardens into tartar (calculus) in just 24 hours. By then the damage is done -- only a dentist can remove tartar. Each day this "contaminated crust" grows and inflames the gums. That's why you need to remove plaque every day, no matter what, to avoid advanced gum disease. But brushing alone does not remove the plaque. Curing Gum Disease is Self-Directed The good news is that you can also be responsible for reversing and preventing all but the most serious forms of periodontitis.

Regardless of what happens in the dental chair, it's what happens in your bathroom that determines the success or failure of your gum disease treatment. Unfortunately, most home remedies such as salves and creams merely treat the inflammatory symptoms and don't remove the popcorn kernels or the plaque build up that ultimately leads to gingivitis and periodontitis. Reversing and preventing gum disease is all about daily plaque control. That means, in most cases, stopping the plaque in your mouth is really in your own hands. Brushing every day is a good start, but it is not enough. Oral Irrigation is an Effective Gum Disease Treatment Dental professionals recommend oral irrigation as an effective way to implement daily plaque control.

Attaching to a water source such as a sink tap, oral irrigators flood the mouth and gum pockets with a jet of water under pressure to flush offending food particles and bacteria from below the gum line. In fact, research at the UNMC College of Dentistry, Lincoln, NE indicates "that when combined with brushing, oral irrigation is an effective alternative to brushing and flossing for reducing bleeding, gingival inflammation, and plaque removal." Some Dentist's still recommend flossing. The site of the infection is anywhere from 4 to 10 mm deep in the gum tissue. Your teeth are not infected, your gums are. The floss will reach 2 or 3 mm at most. The big question here is, "How does rubbing a piece of string (floss) on my tooth cure an infection deep into my gums? If I told my Doctor I was gong to rub string on the infection on my arm to cure it, he would have me committed. We bandage and put dressings on wounds to keep them clean and prevent infection. You must keep the infected site clean on a daily basis. Floss will not do it. Oral irrigation is effective for another reason. Unlike flossing, irrigating is a pleasant experience you will want to repeat every day. And it takes only 15 seconds.

The most common tank irrigator is the WaterPik. http://smile.amazon.com/Waterpik-WP-450-20009320-W... The most common shower irrigator is OralBreeze. http://oralbreeze.com/

Stay away from the professional teeth whitening procedures and from the whitening at home kits. They are using extremely toxic chemicals that can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO TOOTH ENAMEL and premature tooth decay.

Yes,there are plenty of tooothpaste that help but you have to be willing to do a few extra things to curb this present condition, for instance, carry a travel pack so you can brush wherever there is water. Or better yet, keep a bottle of water with you,and every time you think brush, brush. Colgate products have a good history chcek them out. Luck!
