Is it possible to buy a really good digital camera for less than 400 dollars?

I hope my contacts are ready.

It's very possible, but it depends on your definition of a "Really good" camera. If you mean a Digital SLR (the kind most professionals and aspiring professionals use), then you might be able to find a used one that is 5-6 megapixels for a little over $400.

For the "regular" Point and Shoot-style cameras (the vast majority of people use these), you can find very high quality Canon or Sony cameras at 10 megapixels or more for $300. You can get a top-of-the-line Canon Powershot G9 (12 mewgapixel, unheard of in point-and-shoot) for $450 on Amazon. That's top-of-the-line. You can get almost any point-and-shoot for under $400.

Personal experience, i have had the best quality with the following brands:

    Canon

    Sony

    Nikon

    Olympus

    (in order)

Source(s): I know a few aspiring pros, plus cameras are something i research a lot.

Like the other answers here, the D40 sounds like a nice choice. However, if you're more of a Canon person, the Rebel XTi seems pretty good. Both are small and lightweight. Just to broaden your mind, though, Olympus makes some dSLRs, like the E-420, and Panasonic's coming out with Lumix G "Interchangeable lens" cameras. It's a bit confusing, but I think what they're [Panasonic] making is a sort of compact camera with a changeable lens, sort of in between the traditional dSLR and an ultrazoom camera, like yours. The Lumix G1 is coming out sometime in November, with a decent lens for under $800, reportedly. The caveat here is that it's not a wholesome, true dSLR. Anyways, good luck purchasing your first dSLR, hope this helps.

HELL YES. I got my 10 mp Canon digital Elph for about $285 on Amazon because it was last year's model. Most dept stores don't even CARRY 10 mp cameras unless they're SLRs, and I wanted a point-and-shoot model. This thing takes the best pictures I've ever seen, including the ones from my old Pentax, Olympus, and Nikon SLRs and my first digital, a Nikon Coolpix 4300. It is GREAT!

My uncle Vinny has a couple that fell of a truck just the other day. I could probably get you one for around 200.
