How come its only in this country?

That a person is disqualified from landing a job based on his/her age? That HR Managers abuse and misuse the term OQ (over-qualified) yet they'd prefer to hire ill-experienced, unqualified greenhorns over people who have the skill set, have the experience but are over the age of 35? What BS is this? Its only in this country that people over the age of 40 can't land a decent job because they're OQ? Stupid system.

    Putting a new perspective, unless the job really requires skill mastered over experience, a green horn is generally much flexible and versatile to train than an experienced stubborn candidate. It is not totally BS. And considering the number of unemployed in our country, yes some companies through their HR departments makes the most out of a BS system. My Dad fell trap into the same thing. At 50 he was over-qualified yet under-qualified so instead of taking a lesser work responsibility, he opted to retire early.

    My own boss was shocked when he came to the Philippines and we pass by a job ad in one of the restaurants outside Greenbelt. He pointed out that requirements like:

    a) between 20-25 years old

    b) at least 5'5" in height and

    c) must have fair skin and a pleasant personality

    are totally discriminative and are legal offenses in some countries. And just how the hell do you measure a "pleasant personality"? I have to laugh at the absurdity he pointed out but true enough I told him we have such a huge pool of available human resources that we are allowed to put in whatever unbelievably requirement there is for a general job like waitressing or being a salesperson. In our country, we are so vain about the people who serve us we just have to have pretty faces at the front line even if they are absolutely useless in sales talk. =))

    So f*cking true. This is one thing what I find The Philippines disgusting, the rampant discrimination that goes on during hiring and being allowed in certain places. You know many places, no matter how smart or experienced you are, they will go with the one with beauty minus brains. I feel bad for anyone who is considered ugly (dark skinned) as well, because good luck finding a job in The Phils. Sad thing is that there's no law that prohibits discrimination based on looks, handicap, age, etc.

    You even see guards turning away Aetas at the door at malls. Makes me so mad.

    In that case I should stop looking for a job now, hahaha!

    Over-qualified is used to mean many things such as:

    - we do not want to hire you because we do not want to pay the salary that you demand;

    - we do not want to hire you because we would rather train a newbie than adapt to your ways;

    - we do not want to hire you because we want an employee that will stay with us, not retire within the next (fill in a number) years; that will save us from the training expenses and retirement benefits;

    - we do not want to hire you because you are more skilled than us, you might endanger our jobs.

    See? There are so many ways that the term "over-qualified" is used to cover a broad range of topics.

    If you have a right and good connections in the government, even if you're over-age or under-qualified, you can find a job in a gov't-owned institution. I have a 50 above friend who is presently employed in a gov't agency and earning much.

    The misuse of the word "over-qualified" is just an excuse not to hire you because of the following reasons:

    a. you are not belonging to any inflential family

    b. you are a threat to the existing employee knowing that your qualification is better than the rest of them

    c. you have an x-factor in your personality that intimidates them.

    So, where are the best employees gone? Here, there, everywhere but not in the Philippines.

    It is but normal to hire fresh graduates for they bring with them new ken and technologies and need guidance to gain experiences so as to be able to create their own business.

    The business establishment if they hire old ones, there's no guarantee that they can contribute to the company. Some are "matured" enough to keep on working. Matured in the sense that they no longer treat their profession or knowledge as very important to them and in that case, they can never be considered as "assets" to the company.

    This is so true. I think it's discrimination. Also, in here, it doesn't matter what you know, WHO know is more important. Which is really UNFAIR!
