HIV is a retrovirus having a two single stranded RNA genomes and thus is sometimes referred to as double stranded

It has an inside P 24 coat surrounded by a P 17 coat.

On the outside it has two layers of glycoproteins GP 121 & GP 40. It attaches to the T helper cells and the macrophages by means of these GP 40 receptors.

The macrophages thus start producing more HIV viruses and are thus referred to as HIV factory
