9600GT vs my 8800GTS 640?
Is this new card an upgrade? The core and memory clock speeds are higher but I've not found any comparison between the two. Or should I just get two?
I'd like to experience crysis on very high and want to know if 2 9600GT's are up to it.

The 9600GT is ironically a mid-range card and not the fastest card available from Nvidia. I would stick with your 8800GTS tbh.

hi graeme
although the geforce 9600gt is a newer card the geforce 8800gts is a better option if you want to experience "crysis" in high settings
this is due to the 8800gts high memory bandwidth and better memory bus(320bit)compared to the 256bit memory bus in the 9600gt
however the core clock and memory clock on the 9600gt are slightly better than the 8800gts,so this gives the 9600gt a slight edge over the 8800gts in the power stakes
on the whole graeme theres not much between these two cards, both have there own positive atributes and both are excellent gaming cards
running 2 9600gts would be enough to set crysis on very high settings and get between 40 and 60 frames per second, and since the benchmark for seamless gaming is 50 fps this should be fine
one advantage of the 9600gt is it supports the newer direct x 10.1 and pixel and shader model 4.1,it also supports the better pci-express version 2.0 which doubles the pci-e slots bandwidth
however check this following link out,it gives you a excellent comparison chart of both these cards, giving you all major specifications including core and memory clock speeds, memory bandwidth, raster units, texture speed and flops among others, this is prbally the best method of deciding which card is better and which is the one for you
any problems let me know
good luck graeme !

ive got an 8800GTS 640mb and can only play crysis on high. the 9600 is a really great card as its priced so well. but 2 of them in sli is gonna cost ya £300 and still wont run cyrsis on very high. you could either buy another 8800, which is something ive considered, or just hang 5 for the 9800GX2 which will be out in the next 2 months. no exact date yet. expect these to cost £400+ but if you sell your old card then that will soften the blow. thats what i'd do.
bottom line is i wouldn't upgrade from your card to a 9600, its not a big enough leap, if any.
hope this helps!!
btw, if you wanna compare cards then use this link. the 9600 is not on there yet but will be soon.

Honestly? Nvidia's drivers suck so the pure "power" they deliver is severly limited by their proccessing drivers. Go with ATI if your going to upgrade. Why? ATI just came out with it's new 1gig graphics card that not only beats out Nvidia but supports dual bridging, 2 gigs. If price is a concern, wait a month or two then upgrade, never buy a brand new piece, nothing is supported for them and they will severly drop in price in a couple months.
