Suggestion on a file server please?

Hi

I would like a suggestion on a file server depending on these aspects....

Security features - to keep customer data confidential

Cost - midrange, possibly hundreds to a few thousand

Support costs for 3-4 years

Support 1500 customer files +10%/yr for 3-4 yrs

Basically I am looking for a file server to handle about 1500 customer files with room to expand about 10% /yr, with security features for confidential data. Suppose this is for a vehicle dealership with 3 divisions. This could possibly be a number of different file servers or just one server. Brand does not matter. Also, if there is a package deal that comes with hardware and software specifications I could use that info also.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Update:

I guess what I'm looking for is something more specific....could anyone just point to one and say..."use this one because...blah blah blah.

Thanks!

Update 2:

Wow, these are really great suggestions, please keep them coming I can use alot of this info...to further explain about the software setup...

Customers will be browsing the inventory 24/7. There are finance people creating files and salespeople doing the same. All in all it is a pretty simple business, a vehicle dealership (mom and pop type) with 3 divisions acting in concert.

Security: that's set at the network level. Just don't have a keyboard or screen connected to the server.

Cost: if you're willing to buy 3rd party support, BJs is selling an Acer that I'm using as a server (and it's amazingly good for the price - runs cold 24/7 and gets hammered constantly) for $499, monitor included. (I'd rip Vista out of it before I ran it, though. Mine has never been turned on with anything but Linux on it.)

    Support: check with local firms.

1500 customers? How about 15 million? Almost any computer that's too large to fit into a pocket could support 1500, or 15,000, customers.

The software you need depends on what you're doing. Local network access? Internet access through a web page? Internet access through a VPN? I'd suggest a Linux base, running MySQL as the database. The rest depends on exactly what you're doing.

well it depends on how much the files will be access, eg the speed of the network, ive used IBM blade servers or say a Dell poweredge for this sort of setup your trying to get, since very easy to upgrade just by adding an extra blade to the server unit, but costs can be rather high.

    For dell
