I have had ovarian cysts, and continue to have them. My pain, upon rupturing, lasted for several weeks. Every woman is different. There are women who do NOT even know that they have cysts or ruptured cysts. Cysts GENERALLY are a normal, natural occurance. HOWEVR, there are cysts that are hemorragic, meaning that they are blood filled, and when they rupture (just like other cysts) the fluid leaks into the surrounding ovary, fallopian tube or uterus. From what I have studied, and from what I was told, cysts that are about one centimeter or more generally get removed if it interferes with the woman's life and if it doesn't rupture, and it keeps growing. Usually two types of ultrasounds are giving to check the status and the activity of the ovaries and the cysts within them. First, you will have a painless abdominal one that will get a rough idea of how large YOUR ovaries are and the size of your cysts and their relation to the size of your ovaries. Secondly, you will have a TRANS-VAGINAL ultrasound that has a type of "transducer" that gets inserted into your vagina. This takes a look at what is going on INSIDE your uterus, fallopian tubes, etc. They are able to detect any fluid that may have been due to a ruptured cyst. Also, the transvaginal ultrasound can get a better look at individual things and how your blood is flowing within them, etc. A common, NON-surgical treatment for women with these problems, is birth control pills, as many women experience less cyst development and much lighter periods, as it alters the hormonal rollercoaster that our bodies are. If the problems are still severe for the woman, removal of the cysts is usually a last resort.
