Because it is jewelers who determined which stones would be described as precious or semi-precious. It is interesting to note that the stones used in the Book of Revelations (Christian Bible) to describe the gates of the Heavenly City are mainly what modern jewelers describe as semi-precious although at the time that book was written they were precious.

Because it's rarer than ordinary rocks, but not as rare as "precious" stones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds, etc.

I think it's a very pretty stone; I have a pair of moonstone earrings :-)

Why are diamonds precious gems? Same reason, people think they are pretty.

It's name gives it away...In ancient times, it was believed to "contain" elements of the moon, which was worshipped as the Goddess.

  • They are more common than rubies and diamonds. But, I like them anyway.
