Jesus Recanted His Belief In God On The Cross?

The guys at the corner Atheist bar told me that Jesus recanted with his last breath.

Update:

The only one who heard him was a Roman soldier, but he didn't speak Aramaic.

Update 2:

I also heard that a movie's going to be made by Ang Lee about this event.

Update 3:

It must be true if there are two questions about the recantation.

Update 4:

The guys at the bar all have IQ's over 200, so if they say it's true, then it must be true.

Update 5:

Thanks to Brilliant Blue for suggesting that this be a question.

I heard it here first, from you.

Clever. I know where you're going, but what about the verse that says ''into Your hands I commend My spirit''? The verse your friends speak of is from the Book of Psalms. Prophecy was fulfilled as Jesus spoke those words, as well as when He spoke the ones I mentioned.

    Peace,

Atheist bar? IQ's of more than 200? Come on, man...

Have you researched reliable sources and found this to be true. I don't believe in this. Jesus never recanted his beliefs. In his last breaths he said God forgive them for they know not what they do.

Jesus said, 'my God, my God, why have you forsaken me'. This isn't Jesus recanting his belief. Not only does he apparently still believe in God at this moment, he still calls him 'my God' - so he acknowledges God's authority over him. What he was talking about (the forsaking) was the new thing he was experiencing of being separated from God. Because Jesus was acting as a substitute in the punishment for our rebellion (and therefore became rebellious in God's sight as God saw him as he sees us), and because God is perfect, there's a break in Jesus and God the Father's relationship at this point.

What they are probably referring to, are first lines of a Psalm.

"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabec themi" (sp?) in ancient Aramaic.
