Is there a special harness that can be used to ensure the safety of a dog while in the car?
The last time I had a dog, nothing of that nature was available. My dog loved to look out the window and watch the world go by, but I worried that he wasn't belted in like the humans were. If I had been in an accident, the poor dog might've been hurt or killed.
I want to adopt a dog, but before I do that, I want to figure out how to make car rides both enjoyable and safe. I wouldn't want to use a carrier, because they prevent the dog from looking around and enjoying the ride. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Miranda, I volunteer at a shelter and plan on adopting a dog from there. I also encourage others to do the same. Thanks for spreading the word!

Yes there are plenty! And good for you, it's a responsible thing to do!
The RAC sell such harnesses in the UK, such as the one on ebay I have detailed below, and if you go to your local pet shop they will be able to advise on plenty more.
Just remember to take your new friend with you to make sure it fits and is suited to him.
By the way, you say you want to adopt a dog - do go to your local rescues as there are hundreds of dogs in need of homes in them! Good luck and may you have many happy years with your dog.

Yes, there are dog seat belts available, i think you can get them from larger pet stores or buy on-line. Its true what you said about them not being available years ago - it was never thought of was it? Good luck on the adoption, its a lovely thing to do and well done on ensuring your dogs safetly before he/she comes home even! Your dog will have a lovely life with you i'm sure - not many people think of seat belts for dogs!

I have a doggy carseat that works great. It has a bottom insert that inflates so you can adjust the height of the seat, and the main seating area has a 6 inch or so rim around it, so they feel kinda snuggled in. It attaches to the seat with 3 safety straps to secure it. And it has a short leash that attaches to the collar to keep her in place. It gives a little freedom if she wants to lay down, or allows her to get somewhat close to the window to smell the fresh air. It's not really a harness, but I have a passenger side air bag, so I feel that she is secured and protected enough to travel safely.
I have seen several harnesses that attach to the trunk of the dog and secure to the seat in pet stores and mail order magazines too.

They make seat belts for dogs. There are types that you can hook on a harness, or the type that come with a harness.
They run anywheres from 10-30 And you can get them almost any pet store or online.

Yeah there are seat belts for dogs. My mother has one for her terrier. It clicks into the clicky seat belty bit, and has a harness which goes around the dog. I think there's three or four sizes available.

there are seatbelt leashes made by Bamboo. i use them with my 2 dogs. they are available in 3ft and 6 ft lengths and are adjustable. they're heavy duty as well and click in just like a regular seat belt does. they've saved my dogs lives one nite when i deer ran out infront of my car on the interstate. if they would'nt have been buckled in, they would've more than likely been thrown thru the windshield. its a great product and i always buckle my dogs in when they're in the car

If you have a big car like a van you can put your dog in the bad where there is a lot of room.
Good luck!

I can't really say how safe they are but, they have these harness things that you can seat belt into your car.
Also they make crates and it comes with a base that you put the seatbelt through it and then the crate snaps into place on the base.

Ther are special dog seatbelts that you attach to the regular seatbelt. They can be ordered online or bought at a pet store.
