Transmission problems or ???

I have a 98 Pontiac Grand Am, automatic transmission, 110,000 miles. Just yesterday my car started to slip gears, it seemed like. If I had stopped and was accelerating, the car would shake at about 20 mph, seem to take a little longer getting up to speed. Then when I hit about 50 mph, I started hearing a sound. I'm going to check my fluid levels this morning, but is it slipping gears and how serious is this?

Update:

I just checked the oil and I have a major oil leak. There's no oil at all in the car!! I'll add oil and take it to a repair shop this morning.

Thanks.

I had a 1996 chevy do the same thing. For a cheap troubleshooting aide try changing the transmission filters.

This help to solve my issues, dirty filters and the fluid was unable to pass through the gears and allow it to shift.

Could be a sensor. Have a transmission expert look at it. My brother had the same problem and they replaced a sensor and his car ran fine after that. Only cost him around $130.00

did you try changing the tranny oil and filter? it might not be pumping up fast enough, because of a dirty filter.
