Will a new puppy companion bother an older dog?

I have a 10 month old puppy (male), and a nine year old dog (female) who is ailing. I may have the opportunity to adopt a second male puppy about the same age as mine.

In your experience, would the two puppies tend to play with each other and leave the older dog alone? Or are they more likely to "gang up" on her and make her twice as miserable?

All of the dogs are very friendly with each other. It's just that the puppy is a puppy, and very playful. The older dog has been having some medical problems and isn't really able to play with him any more.

I would prefer personal experience to theories. Thanks for your help!

You need to get the female used to the puppy first. During the day, get them together for a mini playdate.

I have a 11 week old male puppy and an 11 year old unneutered male. Whether you get one puppy or two (I see you already have one), you need to make sure that you are there to step in when the puppies start to overwhelm the old dog.

I let my two dogs playfight, but only when I'm right there and keeping an eye on them. When it gets too crazy then I step in and take the puppy away.

The arthritic older dog IS less interested in playing with a mouthy puppy than sitting in front of the TV with his owner, so I can see why you would want to bring home a playmate.

We have a young cat and a family member brings her younger dog over at times. The puppy plays his heart out with them, and this gives our old dog a needed break.

So yes - I'm sure the puppy would prefer to tumble around with a littermate, as opposed to an grumpy elder. There might, however, be more stress on the old dog in yet another change to her environment. Whatever you decide to do, just be sure to accomodate the older dog. Don't leave all three together unmonitored. Give your old dog her own special time to be with you away from the little upstarts.

I didn't go through this myself, but my bff and bf went through this a litte while ago. My bff had a yellow lab and then got a black lab puppy when the puppy was 1 yr old she got another 1 year old puppy this one was a chocolate lab. The two puppies started to attack the yellow lab! the oldest dog is now dead! my bf had a dachund and got 2 brand new puppies about 10 weeks old and the puppies just played togeter and never went near the older dog. I guess it just depends on the age and type og dog! good luck!

Definitely dominant behavior. By the way, desexing will only make him unable to reproduce, it will not change his behavior. Desexed dogs, both males and females, will display mounting behavior if they have not been corrected. Hopefully, you have done some obedience training with the Lab so he is amenable to correction. When he attempts to mount, or when you notice he is standing stiffly with his tail and head raised high, tell him NO or make a negative sound (such as AACK) and immediately demand he turn toward you and SIT. Then command him to DOWN. The Sit is to focus his attention on you (and away from the other dog or puppy) and the Down is to remind him that he is subordinate to you. You need to get control of this situation before the little girl grows up and fights back.

I think you should just wait. I have 2 puppies right now and they are marking their territory all over my house..... SO ANNOYING

Any way, the old dog and your 10 month old will get jealous and not be very happy.

It is also really hard to train 2 puppies or even one puppie with other puppies around.

In my opinion you shouldn't get another dog.

Just try putting them with the older dog and if he growls or snaps at them, remove the younger dogs immediately. Most young dogs think that the older one wants to play, but the older one just gets annoyed.
