I just watched a show on History channel about the bible?

and all the books that were left out. Has anyone read the Gnostic Gospels? I found the information on the show quite eye opening and interesting. Are there people out there called Gnostics? Just curious.

From what I know, the Gnostics were all about knowledge.

They were powerful opponents to Christianity in the second century. They originated in paganism as a combination of Oriental religion and Greek philosophy that was supposed to bring salvation. They were eclectic in that they selected ideas from various religions and blended them together.

They beleived in salvation from higher knowledge.

Their ideas about Jesus as we know them are pretty messed up. They think that Christ was a higher "aeon" or emanation from God. Jesus is not actually God himself for the supreme Diety is so pure that he could never come in contact with a sinful world.

There is a lot more but I digress...........................

Of course! I think any responsible Christian needs to take a look at the accounts of Christ's life that we've unearthed, not just the ones that happened to get published in the Bible.

600 years ago, using only the Bible as a source made sense, largely because it was the only book about Christ that anyone could get their hands on. But now, using only the Bible is a bit silly, and I think the only reason it still happens is because of tradition - many churches have deified the Bible, thinking it to be a holy object incapable of containing errors, and now people are resistant to looking at the new information we're unearthing.

For those who are serious about following Christ and not the opinions of a group of 3rd century monks and theologians, it's important to look at all the material available.

I have been a Gnostic for 8 years. I have a Gnostic Bible. I found it very enlightening.

I would suggest, as a balance to what you just saw, go to alwaysbeready.com and look at the Dan Brown debate. It is similar in dogma and you can read and hear about the Bible and why some books were chosen and why others were not.

The Gnostics are a sect referred to in the Bible. It is a fascinating study of some of the first cults in the church age. New age beliefs are similar, and the above web-site addresses this as well.

Yes, in fact there were loads of 'gospel' stories written by different people but only 4 go into the bible - it's a scandal !

They also left out the gospel according to Dr Suess, luckily, because science has proven that there were no green eggs and ham back then

the gospel of thomas is awesome and can be found online

there are many that will never be released by the church, as they go against the churches teaching:

that the idea of christ is the only way

I have a book with most of the not-good-enough books. It's called "Lost Scriptures" by Bart D. Ehrman. You should check it out sometime.
