The term orb is the popular name given to typically circular anomalies appearing in photographs. In photography and video, orbs appear to be balls, diamonds, or smears of light with an apparent size in the image ranging from a golfball to a basketball depending on the distance of the dust particle to the lens. Orbs sometimes appear to be in motion, leaving a trail behind them.
There are two main trains of thought regarding the cause of orbs in photographs. The first school sees it as a fairly clear-cut case of flash or ambient light reflection off of dust, particles, insects, or moisture droplets in the air in front of the camera distorted by the digital cameras CCD lens being unable to focus, i.e. they are naturalistic. The opposing school maintains that orbs are paranormal in nature and spirits, i.e. non-naturalistic and ghost like.

An "orb" is a round thing. Any round thing. An eye, a christmas tree ball and the earth are all orbs.
orb
c.1420 (implied in orbicular), "sphere, globe," also "emblem of sovereignty," from O.Fr. orbe (13c.), from L. orbem (nom. orbis) "circle, disk, ring," probably related to orbita "wheel track, rut," of unknown origin. Some suggest a connection with the root of orchid (q.v.). A three-dimensional extension of a word originally describing two-dimensional shapes. Astronomical sense is from 1526, in ref. to the hollow spheres that carried the planets and stars in the Ptolemaic system. Orb weaver spider is first recorded 1889.

Orbs are balls of light which are mainly white but can be seen in other colours like red. What these really are as lead to much debate, Orbs have been put down to paranormal phenomenon, but some which are caught on camera can have a very normal explanations, one of the most popular.
Theories is that orbs are a source of energy being drawn from a source e.g batteries, power lines etc so the spirit can manifest itself. But it thought these lights can be caused by other things such as dust particles or a refraction of light in the camera lens. So the debate goes on as to what these really are and if they really are paranormal.

I have seen them, They are beautiful, But these people can give you a better hit on what they are.
We may be living in the midst of other dimensions our eyes alone cannot perceive. New technological advances are allowing us to confirm what many have believed—that there is more to our world than meets the eye. Orbs: The Veil is Lifting shows how modern digital photography allows us to observe what has been with us all along: a hidden world of light spheres known as Orbs.

I like to think that the orbs I see are family members that have passed on.
Some people say orbs are just dust.
I never see them, but in pictures they are all around me and my sister's.
When my grandson was born, the first photo I took of him in the hospital, has a orb on his forehead.

A ball of energy representing that a Spirit or Ghost Is near-by
The most common way to find them Is taking a picture (make sure the lens Isn't dirty) and the naked eye.
