What are "people foods" that dogs can't eat?

I heard grapes and chocolate are dangerous -- but not sure if I understand why...do you know a list, or reference that goes into detail? thanks.

There are some foods that humans like but cause illness and death if eaten by pets.

Chocolate, macadamia nuts and onions are good examples. Each of these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly. Example, Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.

Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger. Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.

    Other potential dangers

Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide posioning)

Potato peelings and green looking potatoes

    Rhubarb leaves

    Mouldy/spoiled foods

    Alcohol

    Yeast dough

Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)

    Hops (used in home brewing)

Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)

    Broccoli (in large amounts)

    Raisins and grapes

    Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

Hope this helps keep your dog safe.

Grapes, raisins ( obviously ), chocolate are the main ones but all dogs differ as to what they can tolerate, stomach wise. I noticed someone said onions - they are not poisonous to dogs but some dogs throw up because they are too strong for their stomachs. Your first poster has given you a good link, use it and write them down for future reference. Always remember though that chocolate especially, is a killer in dogs, don't ever give it or leave it laying around - also, warn any kids your dog comes into contact with not to give ANY sweets to your dog. Good luck.

you really shouldnt be feeding your dog any table food because although it may not not seem bad it can make them sick and/or become overweight. normal dog food is best. no type of table food is good for your dog, you must treat him/her like a dog and not a human.

Honestly... They shouldn't eat any food that you yourself would eat. Feed the DOG............................ DOG FOOD!!! And.... It's not people food. Food is meant for all living creatures.
