    You don't say what year the car is but these tips are for a 2002 escort.

    Remove the transaxle

    Install flywheel holding tool andNOTE: If the parts are to be reused, mark the clutch pressure plate and flywheel

    Remove the bolts and remove the clutch pressure plate and clutch disc.

    CAUTION: Do not use cleaners with a petroleum base and do not immerse the clutch pressure plate in solvent.

    Use a suitable commercial alcohol base solvent and clean the clutch pressure plate.

    Inspect the clutch pressure plate surface for burn marks, scores, flatness or ridges.

    Inspect the clutch pressure plate diaphragm fingers for wear. Replace the clutch pressure plate if necessary.Use a slide caliper and measure the depth to the rivet heads. Replace the clutch disc if any rivet head measurement is not within specifications.

    Inspect the clutch disc for:

    Oil or grease saturation.

    Worn or loose facings.

    Warpage or loose rivets at the hub.

    Loose or broken torsion dampening springs.

    Wear or rust on splines.

    Replace the clutch disc if any of these conditions are presentUse Dial Indicator/Magnetic Base or equivalent to check clutch disc runout. Replace the clutch disc if not within specificationsInspect the clutch release fork (7N515) for:

    Cracks.

    Distortion.

    Excessive wear on the release bearing contact surface.

    Damaged tires.

    Replace the clutch release fork if any of these conditions are present.

    To Install:

    Use (A) Clutch Aligner and position the (B) clutch disc on the flywheel.

    Position the clutch pressure plate on the flywheel and install the pressure plate bolts and tighten them in sequence to specification. Then remove the flywheel holding tool.

    Install the transaxle; refer to Section 308-03.

    Bleed the clutch hydraulic system and adjust the clutch pedal free play
