This figure is from 2004. Please note that if you do some searching you will find that the percentage rises in every state, every year.

"More than half a million people were behind bars for drug offenses in the United States at the end of last year, according to numbers from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. In a report released Sunday, Prisoners in 2004, the Justice Department number-crunchers found that people sentenced for drug crimes accounted for 21% of state prisoners and 55% of all federal prisoners.

The first URL below is the source of the quote above.

The second URL a google search the will yeild a number of ariticles about prisoner populations and drugs.

The figures indicate that imprisoning people for drugs does not solve the problem.

That web site is such a load of cra p its ridiculous!! They give a bunch of bullshi t statistics , then goes on to say you cant make any correlation from their own numbers!!! Why make them in the first place?

The fact is there are hundreds of thousands of non-violent drug users in jail that have committed NO crimes besides possession. Its the laws that creates the crime not the users.

Decriminalize them, tax them, regulate them, take them OUT of the hands of the criminals and treat them as a social problem and not a political expediency to control a poor, shadow population. The system is broken, lets fix it in a sane, scientific manner
