Is it true that hackers can gain control of a stranger's webcam?

I heard there are programs that allow hackers to hijack any webcam they want, allowing them to spy on us with our own webcams without or knowledge or permission.

I don't know whether or not it's true, but just in case, I keep mine facing the side of my computer desk so that if they try, they'll only see a brown screen.

Is it really possible to do that, and if so, is there anything we can do about it?

Yes it's true. If you have any viruses or anything on

your computer it can let the other person spy on you.

What I do is I take my webcam and I make it face the

wall anytime I'm not using it. That way if anyone IS

spying on me they'll see nothing but black. Also if you

want you can always unplug your webcam and hook it

back to your computer when you are using it. But my

technique is just to turn it facing the wall then turn it

facing me when I am using it. Good luck!

PS: Scanning your PC regularly can make a big difference

but still consider turning the webcam off or unplugging it

when not in use. Better to be safe than sorry.

The real problem is that people leave them plugged in and with an interface to the internet that is not passworded.
