Yes - you can use Wubi (google it) to install Ubuntu on your current Windows partition. It installs Ubuntu just like a Windows program - however it is recognized as a separate partition and can be booted to like one. If you decide you don't want it anymore, it can be removed just like any other program. No need for complex partitioning.

Its not installed ON Windows XP, but it can be installed on the same hard drive as Windows. The installer will partition the drive into two logical drives.
I suggested getting a version of Linux that runs off the CD. While it may run slow, it will let you try it and see how much you like it before installing on your hard drive. Knoppix use to be one such flavor, I'm sure there are several now.

well, in the meaning of the word, the answer is NO...
BUT you can install some virtualization software (for example: vmware) and you can install linux into this program so in the end, you can run linux within windows XP and do your experiments ;)

No you can only have one OS per a Hard drive. More than one causes issue. If you wanted to use linux (probably Ubuntu since it is most popular) you would want to reformat you HD and do a fresh install of the new OS.
