What is meant by a team's RPI rating?

What is meant by an RPI rating in college basketball and how is it determined.

I.e. Kansas has a RPI of 7, and Portland St. has an RPI of 90.

KU is a 24 point favorite in Thursday's first round of the NCAA tournament, and I'm trying to do my sports column but all this RPI stuff is greek to me.

RPI is a formula that takes a Team's Record, Their Opponent's Records (50%) and their Opponent's Opponent's Record (basically strength of schedule) into account.

It supposedly levels the playing field and allows teams from major conferences to be compared with mid-major and small conferences by putting an emphasis on wins against quality opponents. Big schools still get an advantage as they typically play more conference games against better teams then the small schools do.

Commonly known as '''RPI,''' the '''Ratings Percentage Index''' is one of the rating systems whereby [[National Collegiate Athletic Association|NCAA]] [[basketball]] teams are ranked.

The Index comprises that team's winning percentage (25%), its opponents' winning percentage (50%), and the winning percentage of those opponents' opponents (25%).

The RPI was updated in 2004 to account for differences in home and away games. A home win now counts as 0.6 win, while a road win counts as 1.4 wins. Conversely, a home loss equals 1.4 losses, while a road loss counts as 0.6 loss.
